TWU receives $300,000 work-study mentorship grant from the
Coordinating Board
10/6/09
DENTON —
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has
awarded Texas Woman’s University a $300,000 grant for
its G-Force student-mentorship program, which is designed
to increase enrollment among first-generation college students
in Texas.
These grant funds
will go directly to TWU students in the form of wages earned
for working in the TWU Go Centers.
“The TWU
G-Force program has been a great success in reaching more
than 10,000 students with the message that college is accessible
for all,” TWU Chancellor Ann Stuart said. “I am
pleased that the THECB has recognized the achievements of
our G-Force program and is rewarding TWU students with these
funds.”
G-Force members
mentor high school students, participate in college enrollment
workshops and staff TWU-sponsored Go Centers in area high
schools. A Go Center is a physical space where students can
find admission and financial aid application assistance and
other information that encourages them to attend college.
TWU’s G-Force
is the largest in the state with 70 student members.
“G-Force
is an amazing organization and grants like this are what help
keep its members active by helping us with our tuition, books
and expenses,” said Luis Rendon, a senior English major
and the TWU G-Force president. “The funds help us remove
some of our financial road blocks in order to pursue our goals
as TWU students and G-Force mentors.”
TWU currently operates
13 Go Centers in four North Texas counties and will be opening
its 14th center in Lake Dallas this fall. The TWU Mobile Go
Center, funded by the College for Texans Foundation, also
travels to area schools and community events for college-readiness
programs.
As part of the
state’s Work-Study Student Mentorship Program, funded
in 2009 for the biennium, the THECB is allocating funds to
institutions of higher education with existing G-Force programs
based on the number of student mentors in the program.
