TWU adapted physical activity program wins national award

DENTON — Texas Woman’s University’s adapted physical activity program recently was chosen as “Program of the Year” by the Adapted Physical Activity Council (APAC), a branch of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).

The award recognizes adapted physical education programs (those not associated with any other organized or non-profit program) that are designed to improve or facilitate health and exercise opportunities for individuals with disabilities.  Criteria include developmentally appropriate programming for individuals with disabilities; fostering the achievement of independence through physical education, activity or therapeutic recreation; and promoting integrity for individuals with disabilities.

The TWU program works closely with the Denton Independent School District, providing more than 50 children and youth with disabilities with weekly activities in the TWU pool, gymnasium or on the climbing wall during the school year.

For more information on TWU’s adapted physical education/activity program, visit www.twu.edu/kinesiology/adapted-physical-education.asp.  For more information on the APAC, visit www.aahperd.org.
