AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry has announced his appointment
of Scarlett Pope of Grapevine as the new student regent for
Texas Woman’s University. She will serve a one-year
term expiring May 31, 2009.
“I join the
board in welcoming Scarlett as our new student regent,”
TWU Chancellor Dr. Ann Stuart said. “I know that she
will serve our students’ needs well and do an excellent
job representing her peers.”
Ms. Pope, 22, transferred
to TWU from Tarrant County College in spring 2007 and is a
junior nursing major at the TWU Denton campus. She is amember
of the TWU Leadership Institute, president of the TWU student
organization Face AIDS, program coordinator for Campus Representatives
Encouraging Wellness (CREW) and a member of the TWU Student
Health Advisory Committee. She will be a student orientation
leader during summer 2008 and served as the opinion editor
for the TWU student newspaper The Lasso during the 2007-2008
school year. She also volunteers with Catholic Refugee Services
in Dallas.
“I look forward
to sharing my ideas with the regents and being the student
voice on the board,” Ms. Pope said. “I plan to
meet with individuals and groups at all TWU campuses to encourage
students to be a part of the process.”
Ms. Pope replaces
former student regent Christianne Kellet of Arlington, whose
term expired this month. Ms. Pope will attend her first board
meeting as the TWU student regent on June 6 at TWU’s
Dallas-Presbyterian campus.
In 2005, Gov. Perry
signed legislation mandating that each public university board
of regents include one student member. Student regents have
the same powers and duties as the other members of the board,
with the exceptions of voting and being counted to determine
a quorum.
