Coordinating
Board awards TWU nearly $250,000 to address nursing shortage
2/11/08
DENTON/DALLAS
— Texas Woman’s University — already the
largest educator of new nurses in Texas — will offer
a weekend nursing program to help alleviate the nursing shortage,
thanks to a grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating
Board (THECB.)
TWU will use the
$249,777 grant from the THECB to partner with the Baylor University
Medical Center at Dallas to create the “Reinventing
Nursing Education: An Education and Practice Partnership.”
“This innovative
collaboration between TWU and Baylor will increase the number
of registered nurses in Texas by making it easier for those
individuals who have a degree and are currently working weekdays
to become nurses,” said Dr. Susan Chaney, TWU nursing
professor and a co-director of the project with Dr. Susan
Sheriff, TWU associate nursing professor.
Through a combination
of weekend and online classes, individuals with non-nursing
bachelor’s degrees can earn a bachelor of science in
nursing and become registered nurses. The Baylor University
Medical Center will provide the weekend clinical experiences
and the clinical instructors for students. The six-semester
program is offered exclusively through TWU’s Dallas
campus at Parkland.
Applicants are
currently being accepted for the weekend nursing program,
which will begin in May. For more information, visit www.twu.edu/nursing.
