Registration under way for dance component of TWU’s Latino Dance and Music Festival
DENTON — Maestra Silvia Lozano, artistic director and choreographer for the world-acclaimed Folklorico Ballet of Mexico, will be the featured guest artist and instructor as the Texas Woman’s University School of the Arts presents the Latino Dance and Music Festival July 15-19 on TWU’s Denton campus.
The event includes five days of classes, workshops, concerts, lectures and a Gran Competencia (grand competition) featuring works by festival participants selected for the gala performance. The dance festival is open to students ages 12 and up, teachers, performers and members of folkloric dance ensembles. The cost of registration is $225 through June 23; registration after that date is $275. The cost to attend one day of the event is $99. To register, visit www.twu.edu/lifelong.
The dance festival also features Eluza Santos, associate professor of dance at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, and choreographer Elisa de la Rosa, who teaches dance at the Alex W. Spence Middle Learning Center & Talented and Gifted Academy in Dallas. Ms. de la Rosa, a former assistant director of the TWU DanceWorks company, will choreograph the world premiere of a new work by composer and guest artist Ernesto Garcia de Leon at the July 19 gala. College, high school and professional dance performers are invited to audition for the work. Auditions will be held July 15 on TWU’s Denton campus. The Latino Dance and Music Festival will include evening guitar concerts and dance events that are free and open to the public. Works by Texas Latina artists Sara Cardona and Maria Teresa Garcia-Pedroche will be on display in the TWU Fine Arts Building throughout the festival. A free public reception to meet the artists, sponsored by the TWU Department of Visual Arts, the Denton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and LULAC Council 4366, will be held July 19 prior to the gala performance that will conclude the festival.
The gala dance and music performance will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 19 in the Margo Jones Performance Hall. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for seniors and students. For additional performance or ticket information, call (940) 898-3721.
