TWU’s Walsh
represents state’s graduate students on THECB committee
3/05/07
DENTON —
Bridget Walsh, a doctoral student in child development at
Texas Woman’s University, recently was appointed to
represent the state’s graduate students on the Texas
Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) Graduate Education
Advisory Committee.
Ms. Walsh, of Crystal
Lake, Penn., is the only student on the committee, which is
comprised of graduate deans, provosts and graduate faculty
from institutions throughout Texas. The next committee meeting
is scheduled March 19 in Austin.
“It is a
tremendous responsibility, but also an opportunity to be part
of a decision-making process,” Ms. Walsh said of her
appointment. “I’m very pleased to represent graduate
students, and honored to represent TWU.”
As the student
representative on the committee, Ms. Walsh will be involved
in studying varied issues in graduate education and making
recommendations to the Coordinating Board.
Dr. Jennifer Martin,
dean of the TWU Graduate School, recommended Ms. Walsh for
the post after seeing her take part in a faculty/student collaborative
team seeking a grant to support a research and service project.
“When the
team met with the head of the foundation from which they were
seeking funding, Bridget answered difficult questions with
complete poise and confidence in her knowledge about the project,”
Dr. Martin said. “This led me to the conclusion that
she could confidently express the student point of view on
this important, statewide committee.”
Ms. Walsh has co-authored
several journal articles and has made numerous presentations
on child development and other issues. She has taught courses
at TWU, and currently serves as a research assistant. Ms.
Walsh also is an adjunct instructor at the University of North
Texas.
