TWU fills golf
course management positions
8/2/07
DENTON —
The Texas Woman’s University golf course has hired Thomas
Roese of Arlington as the new supervisor of golf course marketing
and operations and Julie Halliburton of Cushing as the new
coordinator of golf course services.
“Tom is a certified golf course superintendent and has
more than 20 years of professional golf course experience.
Julie practically grew up on a golf course and has an extensive
university customer service background,” John Cissik,
director of TWU Fitness and Recreation, said. “Both
have outstanding qualifications and will be instrumental as
we continue in our two-year golf course revitalization plan.”
TWU announced the
plan in March to improve the course and increase use and revenue
among the community and students.
Mr. Roese and Ms.
Halliburton, who began their positions in June, have already
implemented changes and have high hopes for the future.
“We are now
open seven days a week and no longer closed for maintenance
on Wednesdays,” Mr. Roese said. “On Mondays, we
offer the twilight rate all day, as either the front or back
nine will be closed for routine maintenance.”
Mr. Roese has implemented
a mowing schedule, sprayed the course for weeds, fertilized
the course and focusing on details to make the course more
attractive.
“I want to
get the course into the best shape possible for an enjoyable
golf experience for everybody,” Mr. Roese said. “I
hope Denton public golfers will continue to enjoy playing
the course as improvements are being made.”
Ms. Halliburton
is focused on encouraging more student use of the golf course
and promoting the course for special events in the community.
“By integrating
the course into the student experience, including existing
golf classes taught by the TWU kinesiology department, I hope
more students will play the course,” she said.
“I also hope
more community organizations realize the potential of what
they can use the golf course for — like tournaments,
scrambles and fundraisers — in addition to daily play.”
Ms. Halliburton
cited the Denton Municipal Utilities’ employee golf
course scramble on Aug. 1 as an example of the type of events
she would like to see more of at the golf course.
Mr. Roese recently
worked as the vice president and director of golf with Mitton
Management overseeing Links on The Bayou Golf Course in Alexandria,
La. He has served as the golf course superintendent for the
Stonebridge Golf and Country Club in New Orleans and the Northwood
Golf and Country Club in Shreveport, La. He also has served
as the assistant superintendent at the Dallas Country Club.
Ms. Halliburton
worked for Stephen F. Austin State University for nearly eight
years, most recently serving as the counter supervisor for
the university’s financial aid office.
