DENTON —
Texas Woman’s University’s College of Arts and
Sciences will host a “Math and Science” day for
Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas on Friday, July
13, on the university’s Denton campus. About 45 ninth-
through 12th-graders from Girls Incorporated® of Metropolitan
Dallas (Girls Inc.) will participate in a variety of math
and science activities during the day.
“There is
still a tremendous shortage of mathematicians and scientists,
particularly among women since these are still male dominated
professions,” Dr. Ann Staton, dean of the TWU College
of Arts and Sciences, said. “The purpose of the day
is to create interest and excitement in math and science and
to encourage participants to pursue degrees and careers in
these fields.”
According to Ruth
Thomas, CEO of Girls Inc., all of the girls selected for the
event have demonstrated a serious interest and aptitude for
math and science.
“They are
excited and feel very special to have a day planned just for
them on the campus of TWU,” Ms. Thomas said. “I
sincerely hope the event will encourage and inspire the girls
to challenge themselves to ‘stay in the math and science
game’ until they are experts in the field.
“Another
major benefit will be the substantial increase in knowledge
about TWU the girls will gain from their visit and tour of
the campus. Several of the girls are already considering TWU
as their school of choice because of reports they’ve
heard from other Girls Inc. members who are now graduates
of the university.”
Dr. Staton and
Ms. Thomas planned the event after meeting at a luncheon in
Dallas earlier this year. They hope to make the math and science
day an annual event.
