Gov. Rick Perry has announced that Rachal E. Salter of Port
Arthur, TX has been appointed the first student regent for
Texas Woman’s University. She will serve a one-year
term expiring Feb. 1, 2007.
“Our students
have always had a high-profile presence at our regents’
meetings,” TWU Chancellor and President Dr. Ann Stuart
said. “I join the board in welcoming Rachal as our student
regent. I know that she will serve our students’ needs
well.”
Ms. Salter, 20,
is a senior nursing student at the TWU-Parkland campus. She
is president of the TWU-Dallas Student Government Association
and a member of the TWU Strategic Planning Steering Committee
and the Texas Nursing Students Association. She has served
as a member of the University Conduct Review Board and the
University Curriculum Committee. Ms. Salter also is a volunteer
for the Children’s Miracle Network and attends Highland
Park Presbyterian Church. She currently works as a nurse extern
at the Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. She will graduate
in December 2006 and plans to continue at TWU as a graduate
student in the healthcare administration program in Dallas.
“Through
my involvement with student government, I know that the regents
have always been very welcoming of students at their meetings,”
Ms. Salter said. “ I look forward to being a student
voice to the board and to express my fellow students’
needs, interests and ideas.”
In 2005, Gov. Perry
signed legislation providing that each public university’s
board of regents shall include one student member. Student
regents will have the same powers and duties as the other
members of the board, with the exceptions of voting and being
counted to determine a quorum.
