TWU becomes first public university in Texas to offer specialist
degree

Sept. 28, 2006
- DENTON — Texas Woman’s University recently became
the first public university in the state to offer a specialist
degree. Graduate students who complete the specialist-level,
60-plus hours of training in school psychology now will be
awarded a specialist in school psychology (SSP) degree rather
than the master’s in school psychology degree.
A specialist degree
falls between a typical 36-hour master’s degree and
a 90-plus hour doctoral degree.
“The SSP
degree is consistent with national training standards and
accurately reflects the amount of work completed for this
advanced degree,” said Dr. Daniel C. Miller, chair of
the TWU Department of Psychology and Philosophy.“In
the state of Texas, school psychologists are licensed for
practice as Licensed Specialists in School Psychology, so
now the degree is more in line with the terminology used in
licensure as well,” Dr. Miller said. “This ‘value
added’ degree will attract more students to the program
and help advance the field of school psychology within the
state.”
The Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board granted TWU the authority to
offer a specialist degree on Sept. 1.
