Wood Johnson Foundation
08/18/06
DENTON —
Texas Woman’s University’s College of Health Sciences
recently was awarded a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation (RWJF) to help provide Hispanics better access
to health information over the Internet.
“We are thrilled
to partner with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on this
important project,” said Dr. Jimmy H. Ishee, dean of
the TWU College of Health Sciences.
Dr. Ninfa Peña-Purcell,
a visiting assistant professor of health studies at TWU, will
serve as the director of the project titled “Studying
Hispanics’ Use of Health Information on the Internet:
Implications for Healthcare Professions.”
“Through
the study I hope to determine the level of Internet use among
Hispanics and compare their Internet use with other ethnic
groups,” Dr. Peña-Purcell said. “My goal
is to make recommendations to increase Internet use and improve
health literacy among Hispanics.”
The grant was awarded
through RWJF’s New Connections program, which seeks
to bring the Foundation a broader perspective in its program
planning and design. TWU received a $41,887 grant for the
yearlong study.
