F. Spicola Forum in Reading on Jan. 28
1/20/06
DENTON — Teacher
interaction with students and its effect on learning is the
focus of the 40th Annual Rose F. Spicola Forum in
Reading, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28
at Texas Woman’s University. Dr. Peter H. Johnston, a
professor at the University at Albany-SUNY, will be the
keynote speaker. Professional storyteller Toni Simmons of
Dallas will be featured in an afternoon session.
Titled “Revealing the Future: Teachers’
Language and Children’s Learning,” the conference will take
place in the Multipurpose Classroom and Laboratory Building
(MCL), located on Bell Avenue on TWU’s Denton campus. The cost
is $55, with on-site registration beginning at 8 a.m. For more
information, call (940) 898-3408 or 1-800-250-7808 or visit
www.twu.edu/cope/rd/spicola.
The conference also will feature a tribute to
Dr. Spicola, who taught at TWU for 31 years and was a leader in
the development of the reading program at the university. She
and Dr. Aileen Griffin co-founded the Fall Forum in Reading in
1966. The TWU Department of Reading and Bilingual Education
renamed the forum in her honor in 1997. Dr. Spicola will attend
the conference on Jan. 28.
Focus areas of the conference include
“Classroom Interactions that Support Learning,” “Collegial
Conversations,” “Literacy Assessment: Learning from Listening”
and “Engaging Contexts for Literacy Learning.”
Dr. Johnston will discuss “The Language of
Teaching and Learning” in his keynote speech. His research
addresses the consequences of teaching and assessment practices
for the lives of children and teachers, and for the literacies
children acquire. His most recent books include “Choice Words:
How our Language Affects Children’s Learning” and “Critical
Literacy/Critical Teaching: Tools for Preparing Responsive
Teachers” with Cheryl Dozier and Rebecca Rogers.
Dr. Johnston served on the editorial boards
of the “Reading Research Quarterly,” “Journal of Literacy
Research,” “Elementary School Journal” and “Literacy Teaching
and Learning.” He chaired the International Reading Association
and National Council of Teachers of English Joint Task Force on
Assessment that produced their position document “Standards for
the Assessment of Reading and Writing.” The International
Reading Association recognized his research with the Albert J.
Harris Award for his contribution to the understanding of
reading disability.
The Rose F. Spicola Forum in Reading brings
outstanding scholars in reading education to Texas Woman’s
University for the benefit of students and teachers in the
Dallas-Fort Worth area. The conference also provides an
opportunity for TWU students and area teachers to make
presentations about their research and teaching practices.
