DENTON — Increasing research and name recognition for the Texas Woman’s University’s Nutrition and Food Sciences program is the goal of Dr. Chandan Prasad, the department’s new chair.

“Dr. Prasad brings with him a wealth of research experience and an extensive background in nutrition publications that will bring the TWU Nutrition and Food Sciences program to the next level,” said Dr. Jimmy H. Ishee, dean of the College of Health Sciences.

Dr. Prasad comes to TWU from Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Science Center in New Orleans, where he has served since 1978 in various posts including professor in medicine and neurosciences and the vice chairman of research in the Department of Medicine. Prior to his tenure at LSU, Dr. Prasad spent eight years at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md., as a Fogerty fellow and senior staff fellow. Dr. Prasad graduated from Louisiana State University in 1970 with a Ph.D. in microbiology and biochemistry.

“I am excited to join an institution with such a storied history of providing a superb nutrition education,” Dr. Prasad said. “My goals are to maintain the excellence in teaching and strengthen the research base of the department through interdepartmental collaborations and industry-university joint ventures.”

The current focus of Dr. Prasad’s research is on adipocyte biology and the role of dietary supplements in obesity, diabetes and heart diseases. He has authored more than 200 papers in the area of appetite regulation, obesity and nutrition. Dr. Prasad holds four U.S. and international patents for treatment of obesity and alcoholism. He serves as editor-in-chief of Nutritional Neuroscience and associate editor of Current Topics in Nutraceutical Research. He also serves as series editor for Nutrition, Brain and Behavior.

The TWU Department of Nutrition and Food Science is administered by the College of Health Sciences. For more information, visit www.twu.edu/hs/nfs/.
