TWU names new Nutrition and Food Sciences Chair

Increasing research and name recognition for the Texas Woman’s
University’s Nutrition and Food Sciences program is
the goal of Dr. Chandan Prasad, the department’s new
chair.
“Dr. Prasad
brings with him a wealth of research experience and an extensive
background in nutrition publications that will bring the TWU
Nutrition and Food Sciences program to the next level,”
said Dr. Jimmy H. Ishee, dean of the College of Health Sciences.
Dr. Prasad comes
to TWU from Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Science
Center in New Orleans, where he has served since 1978 in various
posts including professor in medicine and neurosciences and
the vice chairman of research in the Department of Medicine.
Prior to his tenure at LSU, Dr. Prasad spent eight years at
the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md., as a Fogerty
fellow and senior staff fellow. Dr. Prasad graduated from
Louisiana State University in 1970 with a Ph.D. in microbiology
and biochemistry.
“I am excited
to join an institution with such a storied history of providing
a superb nutrition education,” Dr. Prasad said. “My
goals are to maintain the excellence in teaching and strengthen
the research base of the department through interdepartmental
collaborations and industry-university joint ventures.”
The current focus
of Dr. Prasad’s research is on adipocyte biology and
the role of dietary supplements in obesity, diabetes and heart
diseases. He has authored more than 200 papers in the area
of appetite regulation, obesity and nutrition. Dr. Prasad
holds four U.S. and international patents for treatment of
obesity and alcoholism. He serves as editor-in-chief of Nutritional
Neuroscience and associate editor of Current Topics in Nutraceutical
Research. He also serves as series editor for Nutrition, Brain
and Behavior.
