TWU Honors Scholars
publish first issue of Off the Quill
05/02/06
DENTON –
Students in Texas Woman’s University’s Honors
Scholar Program recently published their first issue of Off
the Quill, an anthology representing the various works
of students in TWU’s Honors Scholar Program.
Off the Quill
includes creative writing, essays on history and literature
and abstracts representing complex math problems and high-level
biology research.
“This is
the first publication of its kind at TWU and it showcases
what the best and brightest are doing at the university,”
said Dr. Guy Litton, director of the TWU Honors Scholar Program.
Dr. Litton said
that while attending national conferences, he and his students
noticed that other universities were handing out journals
to highlight the work of their students.
“We wanted
a similar outlet to showcase our honor students and their
work,” Dr. Litton said. “The project was driven
by the students. They guided the entire publication process
from forming the publications committee, selecting the pieces
for publication and designing the cover.”
TWU Honors Scholars
Kimberly Beck of Seymour, Ariana Frey Gray of Dallas, Sandra
Joy Taylor of Whitesboro, Carla Celeste Bowden of Garland,
Emily Ann Haley of Bayport, N.Y., Elizabeth Oliver of Austin
and Jennifer Ann Tarin of El Paso had their submissions published
in Off the Quill. Abigail Leddy of Maypearl served
as the Editor and Publications Committee chair as a freshman
in 2004-2005.
“My favorite
part of the project was when we decided on the title. When
one of the committee members mentioned Off the Quill,
it just seemed to sum everything up — pioneers, great
minds, ideas and the recording of accomplishments,”
Ms. Leddy said.
The Honors Scholar
program plans to publish one issue of Off the Quill
each year in the fall.
“We have
established a Friends of the Honors Program fund to help fund
student research and support future issues of Off the
Quill,” Dr. Litton said. “I hope that the
availability of some research funds and the opportunity to
be published will provide incentive for students to do more
interesting and compelling research and other activities for
future issues.”
