TWU recognized
as largest education team for the 2006 Komen Dallas Race for
the Cure®
10/26/06
DENTON/DALLAS — Texas Woman’s University was recognized
as having the largest team participating in the education
category during the 2006 Komen Dallas Race for the Cure®
held on Oct. 21. This is the second consecutive year the university
was honored in this category.
TWU had 193 student,
faculty, staff, alumni and friends take part in the race.
The team, known as the “Pioneers for the Cure,”
raised $10,907 in registration fees and donations for the
event.
“We have
had many groups from TWU participate in the race before, but
last year was our first concerted effort to recruit one large
TWU team,” said Amy Parsons-O’Keefe, director
of commuter and non-traditional student services at TWU and
co-chair of the TWU Pioneers for the Cure team. “This
year’s team membership more than doubled, and we raised
more than five times the amount of money over last year.”
TWU was recognized
for having the largest education team in 2005, when more than
80 team members raised $2,100 for the Dallas County Komen
affiliate.
“Supporting
the Race for the Cure® is a natural fit for Texas Woman’s
University,” Ms. Parsons-O’Keefe said. “Many
of our students will be the healthcare providers of those
with breast cancer. And many on our team have a personal connection
to the cause, either having lost someone to the disease or
are survivors themselves.”
For instance, Dr.
Denise Bates, assistant professor of health studies, and her
family walked to commemorate the 20th anniversary of her mother’s
death from breast cancer. Amber Richards, a TWU graduate student,
walked in honor of her grandmother who also passed away from
the disease.
“The support
from the TWU community this year has been overwhelming,”
Ms. Parsons-O’Keefe said. “The student support,
in particular, is significant when you think that college
students are usually on a tight schedule and budget. The fact
that so many students participated by walking and donating
money shows how much this important cause means to them.”
