TWU professor featured in encore presentation of Starting
Over in America
5/19/06
DENTON —
A Texas Woman’s University professor and his wife are
featured prominently in Starting Over in America, an award-winning
1986 film scheduled for an encore presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday,
May 25 on KERA channel 13.
Dr. Phap Dam, professor
of teacher education at TWU in Denton, and his wife, Lily,
were featured in the 1986 television documentary that examined
the challenges refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos encountered
as they resettled in Dallas.
Twenty years later,
KERA, the public television station for North Texas, revisited
the families and individuals featured in the documentary to
learn how their lives had changed. The Dams recently had returned
to Vietnam for the first time since Communists forced them
to flee their home more than 30 years before.
The film also features
Ron Cowart, husband of TWU associate professor of teacher
education Melissa Cowart. Mr. Cowart, a Dallas police officer
at the time, started the East Dallas Police Storefront, the
first of its kind in the nation.
