TWU’s Blagg-Huey Library celebrates 20th anniversary
4/11/06
DENTON –
Texas Woman’s University will celebrate the 20th anniversary
of the Blagg-Huey Library from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday,
April 19, at the facility.
“This event
is a celebration of the library as a landmark, which has done
so well for 20 years,” said Marilyn Dunham, interim
director of TWU libraries.
The event includes
a celebration program, birthday cake and tours of the building.
The library’s 20th anniversary celebration is part of
TWU’s 2006 Homecoming activities. For more information,
call (940) 898-3767.
The Blagg-Huey
library is named for former TWU President Dr. Mary Evelyn
Blagg Huey, who will be attending the event.
Dr. Huey was the
first woman president of TWU and was only the second woman
ever to serve as the president of a Texas state university
when she was appointed TWU’s president in 1976. A TWU
alum, Dr. Huey served as TWU’s president for 10 years
until 1986. She also served TWU as the dean of the Graduate
School and a professor of government.
In August 1983,
the TWU Board of Regents approved funds for a new library
on the Denton campus to be named for Dr. Huey. The library’s
groundbreaking occurred in February 1984 and construction
was complete in December 1985, with move-in completed in January
1986. The library was officially dedicated on March 7, 1986.
The Blagg-Huey
library is a 107,000-square-foot, four-level Georgian structure
designed by the Dallas architectural firm of Hendricks and
Walls.
