TWU SIFE team
heads to Nationals
5/6/05
DENTON — The Texas Woman’s University Students in
Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will compete in the SIFE USA National
Exposition May 22-25 in Kansas City, Mo., following the team’s
fourth consecutive win at regional competition.
The TWU team’s
regional win April 11 in Dallas was its fifth in the past
six years.
TWU also swept
its league in four special regional competitions in the categories
of ethics, entrepreneurship, financial responsibility and
free market economics. The team received cash awards and trophies
for these victories.
Team members are
Gaya Bowers of De Soto, Dancee Castillo of Carrollton, Meredith
Corfield of Lewisville, Andrew Dartt of Denton, Holly Dartt
of Aubrey, Brittanie Graswich of Austin, Kenny Jacobs of Galveston,
Thelma Martinez of McAllen, and Natalie Trail of Daytona Beach,
Fla.
The TWU team’s
outreach projects included assisting small-business owners,
teaching senior citizens about fraud awareness, working with
high school students on issues of ethics and financial responsibility,
and teaching college students about credit card debt.
“Regional
competition in Dallas has continued to grow every year, to
the point that it is the largest regional competition for
SIFE in the USA,” said Sherrie Taylor, a TWU School
of Management instructor and SIFE adviser. “We have
earned the reputation among the competitors in this region
as being one of the best SIFE teams there. We were pleased
that we were able once again to show the quality of students
we have at Texas Woman’s University.”
Dr. David Rylander,
a TWU School of Management professor, also serves as a SIFE
adviser. Both he and Taylor are Sam Walton Fellows.
SIFE is an international
non-profit organization active on more than 1,800 university
campuses in more than 40 countries. SIFE teams create economic
opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach
projects that teach market economics, entrepreneurship, personal
financial success skills and business ethics. Their projects
are judged at competition on creativity, innovation and effectiveness.
