DENTON – Texas Woman’s University will welcome
a record number of on-campus residents when the university
opens its residence halls on Wednesday, Aug. 24.
“Based on
our housing applications, we expect to house a record number
of our students on campus this year,” said Dr. Richard
Nicholas, TWU vice president for student life. “Although
we are over capacity with our more than 1,500 beds full, we
will work to provide housing to any TWU student who wishes
to live on campus.”
According to Assistant
Housing Director Kenny Mauk, nearly 50 TWU faculty, staff,
alumni and others will help the students move into the residence
halls during Pioneer Welcome day on Wednesday.
“In addition
to providing labor, our staff and volunteers will greet and
welcome the students and answer any questions they may have.”
Mauk said. “Refreshments will also be provided.”
TWU’s four
residence halls consists of two multi-storied towers –
John A. Guinn and Stark halls – the traditional Jones
Hall and the new Lowry Woods Community. Lowry Woods is TWU’s
first new residence hall in more than 35 years and will house
single students and students with families in apartment-style
units.
After move-in,
freshmen and new TWU students are automatically registered
for TWU’s Pioneer Camp, a four-day introduction to TWU
that consists of recreational activities, volunteer opportunities,
informational sessions and social gatherings. Pioneer Camp
is scheduled Aug. 24 - 28.
Classes for TWU’s
fall 2005 semester begin on Monday, Aug. 29. Official TWU
enrollment numbers, including the number of freshmen and transfer
students, will be available after the twelfth class day in
mid September.
For fall 2004,
TWU experienced an all-time enrollment record of 10,737 students,
the fifth consecutive semester of double-digit enrollment
growth at TWU.
