recognizes distinguished alumni

Woman’s University and the TWU Former Students Association
will recognize three distinguished alumni during Honors Convocation
ceremonies Thursday, April 21, and at an awards luncheon and
alumni fashion show
Saturday, April 23.The honorees are Dr. Margaret Beard, Dr.
Betty Ferrell and Dr. Connie Sitterly.
The ceremonies
are part of TWU’s Homecoming celebration, to be held April
20-24. Convocation will take place at 10 a.m. April 21 in the
Margo Jones Performance Hall, located at Oakland Avenue and
Pioneer Circle on the Denton campus.
The Distinguished
Alumni Awards Luncheon is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. April 23
in the southeast ballroom of Hubbard Hall. The cost of registration

Margaret
Beard
Dr. Beard received her Ph.D in nursing and education from
TWU, and is a retired faculty member of TWU’s College
of Nursing on the Denton campus. She continues to contribute
to nursing through her support and encouragement for students
and her numerous publications in journals and textbooks.
In 2001, Dr. Beard’s family and friends honored her
community service and contributions to nursing by establishing
an endowment to benefit the Center for Community Health in
Augusta, Ga. Dr. Beard established a clinic at the Beulah
Grove Resource Center to make health services available and
accessible to an area with limited resources. In August 2002,
KEEP (Kidney Early Evaluation Program), which targets African-Americans
and first-degree relatives, was added to the list of services
offered at the center.
Dr. Beard has served as a consultant to Historically Black
Colleges and Universities. She served Prairie View, Tuskegee,
Hampton and Howard universities in the areas of research and
test construction.
Betty Ferrell
Dr. Ferrell’s 24-year career in oncology nursing has
focused on improving the quality of life for people with cancer.
She received her doctorate from TWU in 1984 and, since 1989,
has been a research scientist at the City of Hope National
Medical Center in Duarte, Calif.
Dr. Ferrell is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
She received the Oncology Nursing Society Distinguished Nurse
Researcher Award in 1996, and, in the following year, she
received the National Clinical Research Award from the Association
of Community Cancer Centers.
Dr. Ferrell has been involved in research funded by the National
Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation, the American Geriatrics Society and
many more. She was co-chair of the Task Force on “Pain
in the Elderly” for the International Association for
the Study of Pain. Dr. Ferrell has authored four books and
published numerous book chapters on pain management and the
elderly.
Connie Sitterly
Dr. Sitterly, a 1991 graduate of TWU, is president of Sittcomm,
Inc., and the founder of Management Training Specialists,
both Fort Worth-based firms specializing in publishing, customized
training and development in public and private sectors. She
has developed and presented seminars and speeches for hundreds
of businesses, organizations, government agencies and universities
throughout the United States as well as internationally. She
also serves on the National Committee for Continuing Education
in Consultancy.
Dr. Sitterly is a Certified Professional Consultant to Management
(CPCM), a mediator and professional executive coach for individuals,
executives and teams. She has authored more than 300 articles,
numerous instructor’s guides for textbooks, training
manuals and a series of videos, and is a frequent radio and
television guest.
She has been named to Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s
Who in Education, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers,
Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals, and was a
recipient of the U.S. Small Business Association Private Sector
Award.
