TWU Nursing Professor Named
HOUSTON — Joan Edwards, assistant clinical professor of nursing at Texas Woman's University's Institute of Health Sciences at Houston, recently was chosen to serve as president-elect of the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) in 2005. She will become president of the AWHONN Board of Directors in 2006.
AWHONN is a specialty nursing organization representing more than 22,000 health care professionals in the United States, Canada and abroad.
"I look forward to continuing to work with the board and staff to keep AWHONN and its members on the leading edge of health care practice and research," Edwards said. "It is truly an honor to be elected to help lead what is clearly one of the premiere associations for health care professionals."
Edwards, who joined the TWU faculty in 2002, also serves as a perinatal educator at HCA Gulf Coast Division in Houston , where she is chair of the Perinatal Multidisciplinary Task Force. She previously was on the faculty at the University of Washington , and also has taught at the University of South Carolina and the Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing Serukam in Indonesia . She served as director of Women's Services, Pediatrics and Diabetes Center at Kingwood Medical Center in Kingwood from 1997 to 2002.
Edwards received the Texas Nurses Association Nursing Excellence Award in 2002, and was the recipient of an HCA Frist Humanitarian Award in 2001 and 2002. She is the author of numerous articles on women's and perinatal health issues. She holds a master's in nursing from the University of Washington , a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Illinois and a registered nurse diploma from Copley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Aurora, Ill.
