Texas Woman’s University to host TCWSE workshop; Education Commissioner Neeley among speakers

DENTON — Shirley Neeley, Texas commissioner of education, is among the speakers who will address the issues facing women in the education field during the Texas Council of Women School Executives Region XI Fall Conference, scheduled Friday, Sept. 30 at Texas Woman’s University.

Registration for the conference, titled “Leadership: A Bridge to Ourselves,” begins at 8:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Administration and Conference Tower (ACT Building) on TWU’s Denton campus. The conference will feature a special ceremony to establish the TCWSE archives in the Woman’s Collection of the TWU Library. Cost for the workshop is $35 through Friday, Sept. 16. Regular registration is $45. To register, visit www.twu.edu/lifelong, or call (800) 250-7808 or (940) 898-3408.

Gov. Rick Perry named Dr. Neeley as Texas commissioner of education in January 2004. As commissioner, Dr. Neeley serves as the head of the Texas Education Agency, which oversees 1,037 school districts and approximately 200 charter schools. Prior to her appointment, Dr. Neeley served as superintendent of Galena Park Independent School District, Texas’ largest exemplary district from 2002-04.

Additional conference speakers include Nancy Vaughan, TCWSE president and assistant superintendent of the Decatur ISD; and Margaret Montgomery, the first TCWSE president.

Topics to be presented include the daily balancing acts that women face; finding networks for support; choosing the right job; interview preparation; and keys to success.

The workshop is designed for current and aspiring female school administrators. The TWU Office of Lifelong Learning will award three contact hours of credit to each participant who successfully completes the workshop.
