The Governor's Commission for Women was established by Executive Order in 1967. Commissioners are appointed by the Governor to two-year terms and meet on a quarterly basis. The purpose of the Commission is to promote opportunities for Texas women through outreach, education, research and referral services.
The three main activities of the Commission are:
- promoting issues concerning Texas women - we're currently concentrating on the issues of violence against women; women's employment and economic development; and women's health, especially breast cancer, heart disease, healthy living and preventive healthcare;
- highlighting the accomplishments of notable Texas women, through our continuance of the Texas Women's Hall of Fame; and
- serving as an information resource for Texas women, through this website and through our responses to individual requests.
