Bilingual Education and ESL focus on the development of competencies related to effective Bilingual and ESL Education in EC-4 and 4-8 classrooms, including emphasis on foundations of Bilingual and ESL Education, second language theories and practices, developing literacy in first and second language acquisition, native language instruction, techniques for assessing academic achievement, and linguistics for educators.

Undergraduate

The program offers a Bilingual Certification plan for teacher candidates pursuing a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Interdisciplinary Studies; EC-4 and 4-8.

Graduate

The program offers the following:

  • Post-baccalaureate plans leading to Bilingual or English as a Second Language (ESL) Certification
  • M. Ed. in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum with a minor in Bilingual Education or ESL
  • Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with a minor in Bilingual Education or ESL
  • Ph.D. in Special Education with an emphasis in Bilingual Education

The Student Council for Exceptional Children at TWU received the state super chapter award given by the Texas Council for Exceptional Children outstanding chapter for 2007.  This makes five years in a row the chapter at TWU has received this outstanding award.

Dr. Joyce Rademacher received The Center for Research on Learning Leadership Award from Kansas University on July 17, 2008,  in Kansas City.
