Milestones

1906-1907 Department of Education was organized as a service department for the preparation of high school teachers. The program assumed that high school teachers could instruct primary grades as well.
The Texas Legislature enacted a special certification law providing TWU the unique status of teachers’ diplomas (non-degree) enjoyed by only three other Texas universities.
1911-1912 Name change to Department of Education, Psychology, and Ethics
1915-1916 Name change to Department of Education and Philosophy
1915-1917 Name change to Department of Education. Supervised student teaching program began
1917-1918 Kindergarten established at the University (first in Texas)
Two year major leading to a diploma in Kindergarten and public school teaching initiated (first in Texas)
1921-1922 Name change to Department of Philosophy and Education.
Diploma programs added in health and physical education (first in Texas)
1922-1923 Bachelor’s degree in health and physical education began (first in Texas)
1924-1925 Four year sequences (BS) authorized in public school music and kindergarten-primary education (firsts in Texas)
1930 First graduate work leading to MA in Education
1935-1936 Degrees expanded to include intermediate and secondary education
1942-1943 Name change to Department of Education, Philosophy, and Psychology
1946-1947 Graduate degree authorization expanded to M.Ed.
1954-1955 Name change to College of Education (with divisions in education, special education, psychology, demonstration school, teacher education office, curriculum, library, and testing and guidance).
1968-1969 Doctoral degrees (Ed.D. and Ph.D.) offered in special education
1971-1972 Doctoral degrees expanded to include early childhood (Ed.D., Ph.D.) and psychology (Ph.D.)
1978-1979 Doctoral degrees (Ed.D., Ph.D.) in reading, vocational/technical, and adult and continuing education added
1989-1990 Name change to College of Education and Human Ecology
2000-2001 Name change to College of Professional Education
