Career Services

Serviced out of Denton, Career Services has shared its numerous resources, and hosts a significant presence here at the Houston site.  Nested in the Office of Student Life (Room # 2300) are a variety of materials that are waiting for you to fulfill their purpose in life. 

Resources
Books are available to borrow on topics ranging from cover letters to resume writing; from interview skills to job source reference books; from job-hunting techniques to networking.  Additionally, cassette tapes on strategies to be more effective in living can be checked out the same way - with a picture ID.  Free copies of Job Search Guides can be obtained through individual academic departments as well as the Student Life Office.  Display stands with example resumes, cover letters, action verb lists, writing and networking tips are additionally available for the taking.

Position Announcements
Placed in notebooks in the Student Life Office are weekly updates of position openings.  Student Life also acts as the conduit for agencies outside of TWU to contact for new listings, and within 24 hours after the communication, those job descriptions are placed in the notebooks, on the third floor bulletin board and on the Houston Job Postings web page.  Individual academic departments frequently post job announcements on their respective web sites, and it is not unusual to see postings on academic specific bulletin boards.                                                           

Health Professional Career Days 
Career Days (orchestrated out of the Denton Career Services Office) are sponsored annually at the Houston site, showcasing anywhere from thirty to fifty healthcare employers who are anxious to meet with TWU students and discuss employment opportunities.  This year, we were fortunate to offer two Career Days in Fall, and one more will be hosted in Spring.  On Monday, October 3rd, 2011 there will be a Nursing and Health Administration Career Day from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  This will be followed on Monday, October 24^th, 2011 with a Health Professional Career Day held also from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Spring Semester will bring to us yet another opportunity for employers to be present on site.  Monday, February 20^th, 2012 we will host the Health Professional Career Day, again from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  We are excited about the promising futures of our TWU ~ Houston graduates!

Resume as well as Cover Letter Review and Mock Interview
Please be advised there are numerous services available to you through the Career Services Office in Denton.  If you would like to have your resume and/or cover letter reviewed and critiqued, please email what you have drafted in a Word Document to careers@twu.edu.  The Career Services Office requests that you allow 7 business days to receive feedback.  For those of you interested in scheduling a mock interview, please contact Career Services at 940-898-2950 (or using one of the campus beige phones, dial 81-2950).  It is possible to schedule a telephone mock interview with a staff member from that office, and receive helpful hints as well as encouragement with this practice one-on-one interview.
