Amenities and Offerings at the TWU – Houston Site
For your convenience, there is one ATM machine in the building, located on the 3rd floor in the vending area across from the stairwell. Please be advised this is a HigherOne ATM machine, and a charge will be assessed to access funds from accounts other than HigherOne.
For those individuals cycling to TWU, there is a rack available for student use. If you exit TWU on the Fannin side of the building and turn left, continue to follow the length of the building, and turn left again as if you were walking into the garage. Between the edge of the TWU building and the entrance to the parking garage elevators, there is a bicycle rack on the left. This is strictly for non-motorized cycles. We strongly encourage you to secure your bicycle with a kryptonite lock.
During semesters, the building is open Monday through Friday, 6a through 9p. Saturdays the hours are shorter, from 8a – 5p. Our apologies, but the building is not open on Sundays. Please cooperate with DPS and leave the building at the appointed hour. The officers must make a vigilant walk through of the facility to lock and clear the building of any remaining individuals before their departure at the end of each day.
On the first floor, nestled between the stairwell and elevator bank is a small café. It offers sandwiches, salads, muffins, bagels, frozen foods, bottled drinks, coffee and smoothies, snacks, as well as some emergency items like medicine, folders, CDs, and the like. Hours of operation are: Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
The Mega Computer Lab can be found on the 4th floor in a large room with the number 4123. If you turn right after exiting the elevator bank or coming up the stairs, then walk straight, you will enter right into it.
Gentle Reminder: Food and drink are not permitted in the Computer Lab. Out of respect for others working around you, it is requested that you do not use cell phones in the lab, and keep conversations to a minimum. There is also a Hand Sanitizer available to your immediate right upon entry into the lab. Please take a moment and cleanse your hands before using the keyboards. ITS staff has also requested that you make use of the printers wisely. Print on both sides of the page (duplex) when at all possible, and use 6 PowerPoint slides per page to economize your presentation notes for upcoming classes.
Individual computer kiosks are located on each floor between the ’05 Seminar Rooms and the stairwell. These are frequently used to check email in-between classes or during study breaks. There are an additional six computers on the 1st floor across from Enrollment Services (on the Fannin/Holcombe corner of the building) that many people use as they are entering or exiting the facility. Again, these computers have no printers attached to them, and would be used strictly to work on-line.
Three Computer Classrooms have also been constructed for TWU – Houston: 4115, 4310 and 4322. These are kept locked at all times and are only available for scheduled classes with an instructor present.
The Legacy Room on the 8th floor has been designated as an eating space for lunches and snacks. During those times when it has been reserved for other functions, you may find tables and chairs in the corner lounge areas (on the Fannin/Holcombe edge of the building) on the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th floors. There are a couple of tables and chairs in the 3rd floor vending area as well. Gentle Reminder: Food and beverages are NOT permitted in any of the classrooms. Rooms designated as “food rooms” are 4314, 6310 and 7305 (and, of course, The Legacy Room on the 8th floor). These spaces are generally targeted as lunch meeting rooms, and tend to be reserved for meetings of registered student organizations throughout the year.
For those times when you need to fax something to offices in Denton or to other sites for school related issues, there is a fax machine available for such purposes in the Student Life Office. Staff in that department will fax the materials for you as necessary.
Both the 3rd and 6th floors offer small ice cubes in rather large grey bins located next to the sinks. Plastic scoops are conveniently placed nearby to use when filling up your container. There is also a crushed ice machine located on the 8th floor in The Legacy Room. This machine is on top of the counter, and would be used for smaller containers (like individual glasses).
Students may rent lockers for $5 a semester. Lockers are located on the 3rd floor, and arrangements can be made at the Student Life Office. When a person rents a locker, a lock is also distributed from TWU.
There are three floors with four microwaves each spread throughout the building. On both the 3rd and 6th floors in the vending areas across from the stairwell, there are a total of eight microwaves situated around the sinks in those respective areas. The 8th floor has four industrial strength microwaves for use of students in The Legacy Room.
There are a couple of phones on campus that serve different functions for the student body here in Houston. Please review the following information and make careful note of what to use when, and how to make the best utilization of the facilities.
Please be advised that each floor has two sets of phones mounted in prominent places in the hallways. The beige phone allows you to call TWU – Houston offices using the last four digits of a phone number, as well as other TWU campuses using a campus code along with the last four digits of the phone number. For example, if you were interested in contacting the Houston Student Life Office, you can dial 713-794-2157 from your cell phone, or 2157 from a beige phone. To contact an office like Student Health Services in Denton, a cell phone can be used to dial 940-898-3826. You can also use the beige phone to dial 81-3826 and the tie line will connect you with that Denton Office. The red phone is a direct connection to the DPS in Denton. No digits need to be dialed – there is an immediate response from Security Officers at the Denton site.
There are also two tall blue cylinders directly outside the TWU – Houston building. One is on the Fannin Street side, and the other is on the Old Main/Holcombe side of the building. Pushing the buttons on these cylinders also connects you directly with DPS in Denton.
In the unlikely chance you are stuck in one of the elevators, please be advised that the Emergency Button inside the elevator cab connects you with DPS in Denton. You need describe your location as originating in Houston.
*The one phone number to memorize immediately when you step foot on campus for the first time is 713-794-2222. This is the contact number for DPS and can be used for things ranging from opening rooms to reporting an incident.
Individuals wishing to make copies of materials would need to begin that process by placing funds on their TWU ID badge. This can be done on the 1st floor, next to Enrollment Services, behind the two public restrooms. There is a CBORD machine where money can be inserted, and funds are then registered on the card. Photocopier machines are available in that same area on the 1st floor as well as the 4th floor in the Academic Resource Center (ARC), located at the back of the Computer Lab. Our apologies, but the photocopiers can only be used with funds on a TWU ID card; there is no mechanism in place for photocopier use with a money insert.
A Central Receiving Mail Room is located on the first floor, behind Enrollment Services through the wood doors. Items can be placed in the mail for delivery as long as postage is already on the envelope/parcel. Our apologies, but postage is not sold in the Mail Room or any other place on campus.
With TWU – Houston being a Commuter Campus, it is usual to bring lunch from home, and sometimes breakfast and dinner to campus. Refrigerators are available for use on the 3rd and 6th floors in the vending areas (across from the stairwell), as well as on the 8th floor in The Legacy Room. A full freezer is also found on the 8th floor and is clearly labeled for those colder food items. We respectfully request that you honor each other in the use of these refrigeration devices and take only that food which belongs to you.
Situated on each floor are hand sanitizers in stands with sensor dispensers. Students, faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to make use of the sanitizers multiple times throughout a given day. Because we are part of the Texas Medical Center community, the likelihood of contagions passing from person to person within not only the TWU building, but among the various medical facilities is high. Please do your part to ensure that your hands are kept as clean as possible with all that you touch while you are in the building. Make it a part of your daily routine!
Formalized study rooms are at a premium here at the Houston site. There are four student study rooms on the 3rd floor: 3110, 3118, 3120 and 3128. People tend to also study in the table/chair lounge areas on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th floors (on the Fannin/Holcombe corner of the building). Additionally the 8th floor Legacy Room is a large area with tables and chairs, and lends itself easily to both individual and group study.
Students are welcome as well to utilize classrooms when not in use. To help facilitate that process, public computers in the building have been given a Class Schedule icon on their desktop. When accessed, it will allow students to check the availability of classrooms throughout the entire facility to more strategically plan a place to study. Public Computers can be found in the 4th floor Computer Lab, the 1st floor Cyber Café (6 are available), and at individual kiosks on every floor located between the ’05 Seminar Rooms and the stairwells.
Scattered throughout some of the corner student/lounge spaces are TVs for student use. In-between classes as you find yourself wanting to catch up on the news, please feel free utilize one of the TVs on the 1st, 2nd or 4th floors (on the Fannin/Holcombe corner of the building). For your convenience, there is additionally a Multimedia Room on the 8th floor with a large TV screen mounted on the wall. In the Fitness Center, two TVs in opposite top corners of the room can be used during workouts. Have lunch with a stress buster! Remote controls are always close by…
On both the 3rd floor and 6th floor, there is a beverage as well as a snack vending machine. In those rare cases when the machine takes your money without giving you a product, please see the Bursar immediately on the 1st floor in Enrollment Services for a refund.
