Welcome to the Department of Sociology and Social Work
Our department stresses the unique contributions of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice to knowledge, to understanding, to improving the quality of social life, and to the personal growth and development of students. Our programs are intended to prepare students for a variety of fulfilling careers, as well as to prepare them for further graduate study in the future.
We offer undergraduate degrees in Social Work and Sociology and together with the Department of History and Government, a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. In addition, we offer masters and doctoral degrees in Sociology.

What's New in the Department of Sociology and Social Work
Welcome to Our New Faculty Members!
- Dr. Jessica Gullion joined our department as Assistant Professor of Sociology. She has been a visiting professor in our department for the past two years. Previously she was Chief Epidemiologist for Denton County, a position she held for eight years. Dr. Gullion holds the PhD in Sociology from TWU. She is a medical sociologist with expertise in qualitative research methods.
- Dr. Nila Ricks joined our department as Assistant Professor of Social Work. She comes to us from the University of Texas at Arlington, where she earned her PhD in Social Work. She has previously been an adjunct faculty member at UT-Arlington. Her research interests include teen pregnancy prevention, adolescent suicide, and adolescent substance use.
