Dr. Joni Jensen, D.M.A.
Assistant Professor of Music;
Coordinator of Choral Activities

Dr. Joni Jensen conducts the TWU Concert Choir and the TWU Chamber Ensemble.  She also teaches applied voice, aural skills, conducting, and secondary methods.

Dr. Jensen received both her Bachelor’s degree in vocal performance and pedagogy and her Master’s degree in choral conducting from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.  While at BYU, she studied under renowned conductors and arrangers Dr. Mack Wilberg and Dr. Ronald Staheli.  Her studies continued at the University of Arizona, where she received the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting with a minor in vocal performance.  While a doctoral candidate, she was a semi-finalist in American Choral Director’s Association’s national graduate conducting competition in Los Angeles, California.

Although Dr. Jensen has abundant experience conducting choirs at all levels, she specializes in university ensembles and women’s choirs. Her success as a conductor has led to many invitations to conduct church and community choirs, adjudicate for competitions, and present clinics.  One of her greatest honors was an invitation to conduct a choir for the LDS General Relief Society meeting in the Mormon Tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah.  The event was broadcast internationally to over four million viewers via television, internet, satellite, and radio.  Performing as a soloist has also been a major part of Dr. Jensen’s career.  She has performed in both operatic and concert events, and specializes in Baroque performance practice.

In addition to her performing and teaching activities, Dr. Jensen has research interests in vocal pedagogy in the choral setting, choral conducting technique, literature for women’s chorus, choral arranging, and the choral music of Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten, and J.S. Bach.
