Dr. Janice LaPointe-Crump
Professor of Dance


Janice LaPointe-Crump, Professor of Dance, joined the dance faculty at Texas Woman's University in 1980 after earning a PhD from TWU. She holds a MA from Northwestern University. Her professional career in Chicago includes performing with ruth Page's Lyric Opera Ballet, the Allegro American Ballet, and the Stone-Camryn Ballet, as well as commercial dance and summer musical theatres. Her dessertation on 19th century ballet master August Bournonville was supported by Fulbright-Hays and Scandinavian-American Foundation awards.

A respected teacher of the Bournonville style and repertory, she trained in Denmark with Kirsten Ralov, Inge Sand, Fredbjørn Bjørnsson, Toni Lander, Kirsten Simone, and Dinna Bjørn. Her publications include Jazz Dance: America's Energy and Soul (1992), In Balance: fundamentals of Ballet (1985), co-edited A Spectrum of Dance Scholarship: 1979-1989 (1991), and numerous articles on dance history, education and theory appear in CORD Dance Research Annual, Design for arts in Education, National Association of Humanities Education Journal, JOPERD, TAHPERD Journal , and Dance Council Newsletter. Directed the TWU Early Dance Ensemble, choreographed, and performed for the TWU Dance Repertory Theatre, as well as choreographed for the Denton Community Theatre.

Recognition includes adjudicator for the American College Dance Festival, Central Region; National Dance Association's Artist - Scholar (1993); AAHPERD/Southern District's, TAHPERD's College-University Dance Educator of theYear; TWU's Mary Mason Lyons Award for Teaching, Scholarship and Service; Greater Denton Arts Council's Robert M. Estes Award for Excellence in Arts Education; and distinguished lecturer at Texas Christian University.

Service to the profession includes National Dance Association's Vice President, Dance Education; CORD's Editor for annual Conference Proceedings; member of the Board of Directors for the Dance Council, T.I.T.A.S., Greater Denton Arts Council; and Speaker pro-tem of the TWU Faculty Senate.
