Center Description
The Science and Mathematics Center for Women was established at Texas
Woman's University in 1986 to encourage women to pursue careers in science and
mathematics professions, and to help meet the increasing demand for female science
and mathematics teachers and their need for computer literacy.
Center's Activities
The Center coordinates various programs and activities to serve:
1. Elementary and secondary school teachers and
administrators--arrange in-service courses, workshops, and
conferences to establish changes in curriculum that encourages
females to pursue careers in science and mathematics.
Current elementary and secondary school students--provide
education enrichment activities in science, mathematics, and
computer science for elementary and secondary school
females.
2. Future teachers and future non-science leaders--nurture a
campus environment to encourage and assist women pursuing
career paths in science, mathematics, and computer science.
Undergraduates whose majors are not in a field of science--to
gain the scientific and technological knowledge needed to
fulfill professional and civic responsibilities in an increasingly
technological society.
3. Related pursuits of the Center--submit grant proposals to
obtain funding to support the educational, recruitment, and
research programs of the Center.
Center's Special Projects:
ACES (Access to CarEers in the Sciences)
A two week residential camp for 6th through 12th grade girls to explore
science and mathematics careers. Two camps have been held each summer
since 1988.
Edible Car Contest
An engineering contest for high school and TWU students with teams consisting of
four members with at least two female members. Each team will design and build a
car by using only edible materials. The car must be able to operate on three or
four rotating "wheels" and roll successfully down a 8-10 foot ramp that has a 20
degree incline.
Expanding Your Horizons Conference
A one-day conference for 6th through 8th grade girls to meet successful women
in science and math related fields.
TWU Area Science and Mathematics Fair
An annual event (now in its 14th year) for area students (grades K-8) to compete in a
Science and Mathematics Fair. The main emphasis is placed on targeting
the smaller schools to encourage and keep their students interested in science
and mathematics.
TWU Science and Mathematics Center Newsletter
Sent to area schools and teachers to keep them informed as to the science
and/or mathematics activities or events. Included in the newsletter are courses,
workshops, videotapes for loan, listing of summer camps encouraging
science and mathematics careers, a speaker list identifying faculty members
of TWU who are willing to speak to junior and senior high school students
about science or mathematics. To receive a newsletter, contact the Center
at (940) 898-2769 or 1-800-860-2237 or ACES@twu.edu.
