What is SLRC?

The Science Learning Resource Center (SLRC) was established by a grant from the National Science Foundation in 1978.  The Center offers a variety of resources including

  • Kits:  A "kit" is a presentation on a single topic produced on a slide, filmstrip, video, or computer software.  Titles in chemistry, biology, physics, and general science are available.  For instance, a student may watch a video about the periodic table to reinforce information previously introduced in a lecture or textbook.

Professors in some courses suggest certain kits for further self-study by the student.  Other instructors assign kits for students to complete for credit.

  • Computer homework:  Most introductory chemistry courses at TWU have assigned computer homework.  Students may use the computers in the SLRC to access the homework questions.  The software presents a problem and the student determines the answer to the problem and enters the answer in the space provided.  The software then grades the problem and keeps a running tally of how many problems have been answered correctly and incorrectly.

  • Tutoring:  The SLRC employs undergraduate and graduate students in chemistry and biology to help students in introductory science courses.  These student tutors must maintain a 3.5 overall GPA as well as a 3.5 in each subject they wish to tutor.   (Please note that some tutors cannot tutor all science subjects.)

A tutoring schedule is posted in the SLRC.  The schedule will indicate which tutors are available for each subject and the hours the tutor is available in the SLRC.  The number of tutoring hours available in a subject changes from semester to semester depending on the availability of proficient tutors.

Access to tutors is offered on a first-come, first-served basis and no appointments are accepted.

  • Physics Videos:  Dr. Espinosa, the Physics professor, has a number of physics problems demonstrated on videos which are kept in the SLRC.  The videos are available in SCI 116, which is accessed through room 115.

  • SLRC is also responsible for administering TWU's Science Placement Tests to students who have not yet taken their introductory biology, chemistry, physics, and zoology courses.  You can learn more about placement testing by visiting Academic Advising or contacting Mike Elias at 940-898-3854.
