ADDITIONAL DUTY SAFETY OFFICER

PROGRAM STATEMENT

The expectation for employees to work safely is effectively established and set out in safety guidelines, procedures, standards, and regulations. The intent of the program is to provide employees with a consistent set of written instructions and expectations for safe behavior using recognized safety procedures, standards, guidelines and regulations. The Safety Office will use this program to consistently communicate the policies, procedures, regulations, and standards to the University community through the Additional Duty Safety Officers.

Each department on the Denton/Dallas/Houston campuses has an assigned ADSO. 

PROGRAM
1.  Understand and follow all agency safety and health standards, regulations, procedures, guidelines, or practices.
2.  Support the Environmental/Occupational Safety and Health Program.

3.  Act as a liaison to the Safety Office.

4.  Communicate safety issues to area workers including student workers.

5.  Coordinate safety training within work area when appropriate.

6.  Train co-workers in specific safety regulations.

7.  Make suggestions to their Supervisor for improving work procedures and practices to help them develop and enforce safer processes.

8.  When required, get compliance signatures.

9.  Routinely check the The Vibe  for updated safety information.

10. Complete the periodic Safety Survey.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Executive Management
Give high priority to safety and health work practice. Others will observe their actions and will follow the lead. Support incorporation of safety concepts and practices into all program operations of TWU. Establish a safety climate that encourages employees to fully participate in the program. Support active participation in program activities by all employees.

Safety Coordinator

Develop a safety management system that provides a workplace with minimal employee safety and health risk exposures. Plan, implement, and maintain the Environmental/Occupational Safety and Health Program. Define the agency's safety and health objectives and performance standards. Assist supervisors and employees to develop and implement safe work practices for all area operations. Develop a management information system to identify and monitor specific types of loss exposures. Support the agency Safety Committee, Emergency Planning Committee, and Risk Management Committee. Train Additional Duty Safety Officer to provide assistance, support, and resources to the safety office, as appropriate.

Supervisors

Establish safe work methods and practices within the work area. Consistently apply and enforce any safety and health rules, methods, procedures, policies, or standards. Reinforce safe behavior. Train and observe employees in safe performance prior to beginning work. Retrain employees in any safety and health methods, procedures, policies, or standards. Promptly review the facts and circumstances surrounding accidents, employee injury and other departmental incidences.

Employees
Understand and follow agency safety and health policies. Use protective equipment. Immediately report accident, incident, or injury to the supervisor. Make safety suggestions to the, Safety Office or Supervisor. Immediately report known or suspected hazards to supervisor. Seek training opportunities regarding safe work practices and safe operating procedures.
