| Description of research activities: Dr. Walker-Batson’s research focus is on neurological rehabilitation and mechanisms of learning after brain injury. She has received a James B. Shannon biomedical research award from the National Institutes of Health to explore the potential of using adjunctive pharmacotherapy to enhance recovery from language (aphasia) and motor (hemiplegia) deficits subsequent to stroke. Current research includes: (1) explorations of unattended sensory learning to accelerate sensory/motor recovery of the hand monitored with brain imaging (fMRI) and (2) a clinical trial comparing a drug combination to a placebo paired with behavioral treatment to enhance recovery from aphasia following stroke. | |
