- TWU School of Physical
Therapy was well-represented at the American Physical
Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting in
Boston on Feb. 14 - 17, 2007. Despite the terrible
winter weather, both TWU faculty and students were able
to present their respective research findings to a
record breaking 6,200 attendees. Dr. Suh-Jen Lin, Dallas
faculty member, presented a platform presentation at the
cardiopulmonary section’s session entitled “Reliability
and validity of the six-minute walk test in persons with
transtibial amputation”. Dr. Merry Lynne Hamilton,
Houston faculty member, presented a platform
presentation at the pediatrics section’s session
entitled “Frequency of Use of Pediatric Assessment
Measures: A National Survey of Pediatric Certified
Specialists”.

roles within APTA as well; those include Dr. Peggy
Gleeson, Vice President of the Education Section; Dr.

APTA’s Health Policy and Administration Section as well
as Editor of HPA’s publications HPA Resource and HPA
Journal.

TWU PT students joined
breast cancer survivors, Susan Baker (mother of Breanna Ronnander,
SPT) and Carolyn Kelley (PT faculty member), in the Susan G. Komen
Race for the Cure, October, 2006, in Houston, TX. Other students not
pictured participated in the competitive run and provided massages
to race participants.

The Houston campus held
its third annual Research Day last July 10, 2006. This
year's theme was "Looking into the Crystal Ball: Making
Evidence-based Clinical Predictions." It was a very well
attended event. The keynote speaker was nationally recognized
researcher-clinician Dr. John Childs, Director of Research at the US
Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy.
He gave an insightful talk on "The Race for Ownership of Low Back
Pain: Evidence Trumps Politics."
Entry-level students,
with the assistance of their faculty mentors, presented 18 poster
and 2 platform presentations that showcased the results of their
year-long research projects. Leah Maddux and Susan von
Villas, mentored by Dr. Peggy Gleeson, were awarded best platform
presentation for their presentation on "Recruitment and Retention
Factors in Physical Therapy: Perceptions of Employers and
Employees." Rebecca Crago, Emily Petersen, Eric Stout,
Jennifer Thole, and Mandon Welch, mentored by Drs. Alexis
Ortiz and Bill Bartlett, were awarded best poster presentation for
their poster on "EMG Analysis of Fatigue Effects of Target Muscles
in Women during Jump Tests."

The Dallas campus held
its annual Research Day last April 27, 2006. Entry-level and
post-professional students, guided by faculty mentors, spent the
past year working on their research projects, which culminated in 10
platform and 6 poster presentations. Dr. Nancy DiMarco,
Professor at the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences at Texas
Woman's University was the keynote speaker.
Best platform
presentation was awarded to Lola Elder, Cassie Sommerlad, Tracy
Dingman. for their presentation entitled “Reliability and validity
of the 6-minute walk test in persons with amputation”. Dr. Suh-Jen
Lin was their faculty mentor. Best poster was awarded to Dulce
Mercado, Dara Bierman, Wendi Barr, and their faculty mentor Dr.
Sharon Wang. The title of their poster was “Does physical therapy
intervention influence electromyographic activity of the upper and
lower trapezius in symptomatic patients?”
