Transitional D.P.T.

The School of Physical Therapy at Texas Woman's University starting in the Summer of 2008 began offering a transitional DPT degree. This program is for licensed, or soon to be licensed, physical therapists with a master’s degree to obtain a doctorate-level degree in physical therapy.

The tDPT is a hybrid program, combining on-site and online content at both the Houston and Dallas campuses. The onsite component of a class typically consists of 2-3 weekends (Fri and/or Sat.) per semester, with the remainder online.
The requirements of the tDPT for a licensed physical therapist with a Master’s degree (with a minimum of 66 graduate credits) will be comprised of a minimum of 24 semester credit hours of courses, which are divided into 18 hours of “core” courses and 6 hours of electives. Five of the required six “core” courses have an onsite component. Each course is 3 credit hours. A series of electives are offered throughout the year in UE Rehabilitation, Pediatrics, Geriatrics and Woman’s Health, most of which are online.
(A total of 90 approved post-baccalaureate semester credit hours are currently required by TWU to award a doctoral degree. Additional coursework may be required for students who hold MS degrees with fewer than 66 credits).

The core course requirements for the tDPT are:

* PT 6513:  Topics in Evidence-based Practice in Physical Therapy (online)

   PT 6123:  Patient/Client Management I

   PT 6133:  Patient/Client Management II

PT 6143:  Professional Management and Leadership in Physical Therapy

PT 6153:  Diagnostic Imaging for Physical Therapists

PT 6163:  Illness Prevention and Health Promotion in Physical Therapy

* This course must be taken prior to or concurrent with enrollment in either PT 6123 or PT 6133.
