Reflections On Over a Decade of Excellence

Lela Llorens Ph.D, OTR, FAOTA
“I am still in awe of the high honor accorded me as the inaugural Vanderkooi Lecturer.  I continue to feel highly honored to have had a productive relationship with the Texas Woman’s University School of Occupational Therapy for almost 50 year beginning with Ruth Whipple Pershing, Cruz Mattei as fellow classmate at Western Michigan University and Virginia Chandler Dykes, as a fellow intern at St Luke’s Hospital in Chicago. The lecture gave me the wonderful opportunity to recognize the legacy that was Ms Fanny B. Vanderkooi and to forge another link in that legacy that has been recognized and continued by the work of Drs. Janette Schkade and Sally Schultz in their conceptualization of occupational adaptation that incorporated my theoretical work and that of Lorna Jean King...It has been a pleasure to have been an early part of an historic continuing education event that has shown significant growth and development over the ten years of its existence”.

Charles Christiansen, EdD, TO(C), OTR, FAOTA
“It is hard for me to believe that a decade has passed since this fabulous lecture series was inaugurated in the name of a very significant figure in the development of occupational therapy in Texas. In reflecting on my own experience as an honored lecturer, I can certainly recount the immense sense of responsibility I felt at offering something worthwhile for the many people gathered for the event. I will always be grateful to the School of Occupational Therapy at Texas Woman’s University for the soul food provided by my Vanderkooi Lectureship opportunity”.

Catherine Trombly, Sc.D., OTR/L, FAOTA
“I remember feeling very honored to be invited to do the Vanderkooi Lecture. It is rare that a Department of Occupational Therapy should have an endowed lecture, so being invited to participate was all the more special…I especially  enjoyed meeting with the students in workshops afterward and conversing with them about occupational therapy and their hoped-for careers”.

Carolyn Baum. PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
“...I was very honored to be chosen as a Vanderkooi Lecturer.  Ms. Vanderkooi began an important tradition of scholarship.  It was my privilege to participate with you in honoring that tradition”.

Betty Abreu
“I continued to be humbled by the honor bestowed upon me by Texas Woman’s University School of Occupational Therapy. Thank you for allowing me to become a part of your history… As we say in Puerto Rico, “Felicitaciones y Adelante con la mission” (Congratulations and keep moving forward with this great mission)”.

Shereen D. Farber, Ph.D., OTR, FAOTA
“I was honored to be asked to present a lecture at the Vanderkooi Seminars and used the opportunity to reflect upon my occupational voyage as a therapist.  For many years, I have been told that I "think way outside the box".  At TWU, the faculty and students seem to be receptive to applying concepts of occupational performance in creative ways, so I felt right at home”.

Linda S. Fazio, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA
“Being named as one of the Annual Fanny B. Vanderkooi Endowed Lectureship recipients was one of the most significant highlights of my career in occupational therapy. As a graduate of Texas Woman's University, and as a former faculty member in the School of Occupational Therapy I have always valued my associations with TWU.  I have been particularly proud of the TWU legacy that values and celebrates the accomplishments of women.  The School of Occupational Therapy has exemplified that heritage in the many opportunities granted women of all ages, ethnicities and cultures and, in their resulting achievements.  I thank you for the opportunity to be associated with such an exemplary program for the ongoing recognition and support of occupational therapy scholarship and practice”.

Barbara Kornblau. JD, OT/L FAOTA
“I want to thank you for your wonderful hospitality … Presenting the 10th Vanderkooi Lecture was real honor for me.  Joining such a distinguished group of occupational therapist make the honor that much greater for me.  I will never forget this wonderful experience”.
