F-1 Extension of Stay
REQUIREMENTS:
- Student has remained in F-1 status
- Student has a legitimate reason, which must be documented, to
extend his stay, such as:
- Illness
- Academic reasons beyond student's control, such as:
- Change in major
- Delays in research project
- Need for additional courses
- Student will need to show proof of funds before SEVIS I-20 is issued.
- Application for Extension of Stay must be made before, but no
earlier than 30 days before the ending date on the current SEVIS I-20.
- If student fails to apply for extension within the 30-day period
before ending date on the SEVIS I-20, he/she must apply for reinstatement.
PROCEDURE:
Student brings following to International Office:
- Old SEVIS I-20
- Documentation from department or doctor explaining reason
for delay in completing program, and an estimate of completion date.
- Financial documentation to indicate student has enough to
cover his expenses until the completion date.
- Completed I-538
- International Education Office prepares new SEVIS I-20 with new graduation
date and new expenses and financial support.
- Student signs bottom of SEVIS I-20.
- International Education Office sends I-538 and top page of SEVIS I-20 to
ACS, London KY within 30 days of approving the extension.
- International Office gives the student the new SEVIS I-20, with old SEVIS I-20 attached.
