Alternative Breaks
The TWU Alternative Breaks program places teams of students in communities to engage in community service during Spring Break and one weekend each semester. Students perform short-term projects for community agencies and learn about various social issues. The objective of an Alernative Break program is to involve college students in service projects and to give students opportunities to learn about the problems faced by members of the communities with whom they otherwise might have little or no contact. (Adapted from Break Away, the National Alternative Break organization). In the past, we have helped at a camp for developmentally delayed adults, helped with Hurricane Katrina rebuilding efforts and assisted at a soup kitchen and day care for homeless children. Activities inspire lifelong active citizenship.
