West Jones Hall
The Counseling Center offers a variety of groups each semester. Listed below are many of the groups we usually offer. Flyers are posted each semester with groups for that semester. If you are interested in any of the groups, please call or come by the Counseling Center. You will be asked to register your interest and submit a semester schedule. Group times will be determined according to registered participants’ schedules.
Descriptions of Typical Counseling Center Groups
Accepting Your Body
A group for students who would like to improve their feelings and thoughts about the body, especially the one they occupy. This group is designed to help members explore self-messages that may lead to a negative body image and improve self-acceptance.
Black Women's Support Group
A group designed to provide a forum for personal growth and support through the open sharing of common concerns, experiences, and ideas of African American women.
Coping with Long-Distance Relationships
A group to provide support for those struggling to maintain a long-distance relationship.
Career Exploration
This is a five-week group for those who are undecided or uncertain about their choice of major or career. Members will learn a process for career choice, take interest inventories to help focus their search, and explore career and educational options.
Graduate Student Support Group
A safe and consistent space for grad students to share, unload, vent, and get support from each other. Grad school is so demanding and doesn’t leave much time to take care of yourself. Take this one hour a week for yourself.
Latina Circle
An ongoing gathering aimed at providing a safe forum for personal growth and support through the sharing of common concerns, experiences and feelings about living as Latinas.
Men's Issues Support Group
For those men on campus looking for support while attending Texas Woman’s University.
Relationship Issues
This group is designed to help those who find relationships difficult by providing support and information.
Self-Hypnosis
This is a four-week group that teaches the process of self-hypnosis and how to use it to help accomplish goals and for stress reduction.
Sexual Abuse Recovery Group
For those in the process of recovering from the traumatic effects of incest and childhood sexual abuse. Our focus will be on discovering ways to heal, empower yourself, and get on with your life.
Sexual Identity Issues Group
A safe and non-biased gathering for those in the process of exploring sexual identity issues. Various points of view will be equally respected and explored.
Stand Up for Yourself
Learn how to be assertive and get your needs met. This assertiveness training group will meet for six weeks and will cover assertiveness skills such as effective communication, setting personal boundaries, and improving confidence.
Stress Management
A short-term group for individuals who wish to develop healthier ways to understand, assess and cope with stress. Learn relaxation techniques and behavioral/thinking strategies to reduce stress.
Women Loving Women
A diverse gathering for lesbian & bisexual women to discuss and process individual, relationship, and/or family issues. Come join us for an in-depth group for sexually diverse women who value and seek personal growth.
Women's Personal Growth Group
A group for women who desire a safe place to receive support and to openly share concerns and experiences regarding personal and relationship issues. It's a group specifically designed for women who value and seek personal growth. All women are welcome.
Some groups may require a pre-group interview.
