TOEFL Exemptions Section

All international students must present TOEFL scores of 550 or above to be admitted unconditionally. However, there are some exceptions for the TOEFL for undergraduate and graduate international applicants.

Undergraduate TOEFL Exemption Section

The following exceptions apply to the TOEFL requirements for undergraduate international applicants:

  • Students who have earned a diploma from an accredited United States High School or a degree from an accredited United States college or university
  • Students who have completed English 1013 or 1023 (Freshman Composition) with a grade of "C" or better
  • Students who have completed Level 6 at the University of North Texas' Intensive English Language Institute
  • Students who have successfully completed Texas International Education Consortium (TIEPs) advanced-level program as defined in the information provided by TIEP and who are seeking admission to our campus
  • Students who are citizens of Australia, New Zealand, the British Virgin Island, Jamaica, United Kingdom, Ireland, Antigua, Northern Ireland, Philippines, Scotland, South Africa, St. Lucia, Wales, Bahamas, Barbados, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, The Fiji Islands, Sierre Leone, Gambia, Liberia, Switzerland, Holland and Canada, excluding French-speaking Quebec.
  • Students who have the following test and scores:
    Tests Score

    CAE B or Higher
    CPE C or Higher
    SAT II E 968 or Higher
    IELTS Overall band 6.5 or Higher
    SAT Verbal 500 or Higher
    ACT Verbal 19 or Higher
    TAAS

    Scaled score REading-TLI 4X-89

    Writing 1770
  • Students who have obtained the following foreign high school diploma/test/scores:
    Tests Score
    GCE, GCSE, IGCSE C or higher in English Language
    WASC, KCSE, SSCE or equivalent national exams C or higher in English Language

Graduate TOEFL Exemption Section
The following exceptions apply to the TOEFL requirements for graduate international applicants:

  • Students who have earned a degree from an accredited United States college or university.
  • Students who have completed Level 6 at the University of North Texas Intensive English Language Institute.
  • Students who are citizens of Australia, New Zealand, the British Virgin Island, Jamaica, United Kingdom, Ireland, Antigua, Northern Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, St. Lucia, Wales, Bahamas, Barbados, and Canada (excluding French-speaking Quebec), Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Fiji Island, Sierre Leone, Gambia, Switzerland. Proof of citizenship must be provided such as birth certificate or passport.
  • A verbal score of 500 or above on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or a GMAT equivalent to 50th percentile. These scores must be presented by the official deadlines published.
  • Students who are recommended by the Department Chair or Dean for provisional admissions because of excellent academic credentials and a minimum TOEFL score of 500.These students will be required to complete with a grade of B or better specific courses in intensive English (6-9 credit hours) for academic credit during their first year at the University. If they are unsuccessful they must fulfill the standard TOEFL requirement for admission or withdraw from the University.
  • Students who have successfully completed Texas International Education Consortium (TIEPs) advanced-level program as defined in the information provided by TIEP and who are seeking admission to our campus
