MISSION
The Multicultural Student Network (MSN) is an organization sponsored by the Office of Intercultural Services designed to heighten diversity/cultural awareness and sensitivity within the community. Members will become student diversity educators and will provide diversity education/training to the community. MSN will plan and implement cultural celebrations, activities and events for educational purposes.
What are the benefits to being a part of MSN?
- MSN training and experience is great preparation for graduate school. MSN will cultivate the oral, research, and writing skills needed to succeed in that environment.
- Diversity is essential to the vitality of the workforce. People with a background in cultural awareness and sensitivity are considered very marketable and in high demand.
- MSN is a high profile, high involvement position and an excellent opportunity to take on a leadership role and gain experience in developing programs and presentations that nurture the notion for multicultural education. The skills you acquire will benefit you no matter what field of study you are in.
Qualifications include prior involvement and experience with people from diverse backgrounds and an ability to be accepting of the expanding definition of diversity. Other criteria include the following:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above
- No record of disciplinary or academic probation
- Willingness to participate in activities throughout the year
- Ability to make oral presentations
- Participation in at least one student organization/sorority or other extracurricular activity
Because this select group of students will be in a high profile, high involvement position, training will be required. All applicants will attend a training program if selected.
TIME COMMITMENT
- MSN requires that the student's commit to participate an entire academic school year
- MSN will meet on a bi-weekly basis during the course of the semester
- Special events or programs will be announced in advance and may require additional meeting times
MSN COMMITTEES
Cultural Connections Conference Committee
This committee provides support to the Office of Intercultural Services by assisting in the planning of the Cultural Connections Conference Series (CCCS). The CCCS includes both the Latina Student Leadership Conference and the African American Student Leadership Conference. Subcommittees formed within this group are in charge of coordinating Speakers and Workshops, Marketing and Promotions, Hospitality, Volunteers and Sponsorship and Fundraising.
Cultural Programming Committee
This committee provides support to the Office of Intercultural Services by assisting in the planning of cultural celebrations and events. Some events include Black Heritage month events, Diversity Days, Semana de Cultura (the Week of Culture), Native American Heritage Celebration, Asian American History week and more.
Multicultural Organizations Committee
This committee serves as a networking tool for all represented cultural student organizations on the TWU campus. Through presidents' roundtable meetings and discussions cultural student organizations can come together to discuss pressing issues and resolutions, develop leadership skills and implement joint programming.
Mentoring and Advising Committee
This committee serves as a networking tool for all student leaders involved in one of the following programs, First Year Success Mentoring and Advising Program, First Generation Program and G-Force. Through this committee mentors will learn ways to incorporate diversity education into their programs and utilize new mentoring techniques.
