Opening Keynote Speakers

Linda Dorn, Professor of Teacher Education, University of Arkansas at Little Rock
Linda Dorn is a Professor of Reading and Director of the Center for Literacy at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She has 28 years of experience in education, including both elementary and intermediate levels. Linda serves on the Board of Directors for the Reading Recovery Council of North America. Her contributions to literacy education are nationally recognized. Linda has published widely, including research on early intervention, articles, children’s materials, and staff development training materials. She has co-authored four professional books: Apprenticeship in Literacy: Transitions Across Reading and Writing; Scaffolding Young Writers: A Writing Workshop Approach; Shaping Literate Minds: Developing Self-Regulated Learners; and Teaching for Deep Comprehension: A Reading Workshop Approach (Stenhouse). She is the primary developer and lead trainer for the Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy Model. Currently, Linda is directing research on the Comprehensive Intervention Model, including the development and implementation of Intervention Groups for struggling readers in the intermediate grades.
Barbara Schubert, Director of the Comprehensive Language and Literacy Model and Reading Recovery Trainer, Saint Mary’s College
Barbara Schubert is a Reading Recovery Trainer at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California where she also directs the Comprehensive Language and Literacy Reform Model project. She is a respected educator, author, consultant and leader in literacy and cross-cultural understanding. Barbara has been the recipient of many field study grants in the areas of literacy and history and social science, including Fulbright-Hayes Fellowships to West Africa and to China. In addition, she has been the recipient of the Margaret Lynch Exemplary Service Award and the John Martin Distinguished Service Award for having made an outstanding contribution to literacy in California. Barbara is a Past President of the California Reading Association.

Tony Stead, Educational Consultant, Australia
Tony Stead is an Australian educator who has taught in elementary schools and lectured at the University of Melbourne. Tony is the past president of the Melbourne Chapter of the Australian Reading Association and the author of many publications. Tony currently works with school districts across the United States. His greatest love is learning from children.

Billie J. Askew, Professor Emerita, Texas Woman’s University
Billie J. Askew is Professor Emerita at Texas Woman’s University. She is a past-president of the Reading Recovery Council of North America and the North American Trainers Group, and she currently serves as the U. S. representative on the Executive Board of the International Reading Recovery Trainers Organization. With Jan Gaffney, Billie was the co-editor of Stirring the Waters: The Influence of Marie Clay.
Janet Behrend, Reading Recovery Trainer, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Center for Literacy
Janet Behrend worked in the Kansas City School District in Missouri for 23 years as a classroom teacher, Title I Reading and Basic Skills teacher, Title I instructional facilitator, district reading resource teacher, and Reading Recovery teacher leader. In 2002 she retired from the school district and joined the staff of the Center for Literacy at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where she is currently a Reading Recovery trainer.
Catherine Compton-Lilly, Assistant Professor and Reading Recovery Trainer, University of Wisconsin at Madison
Catherine Compton-Lilly is a Reading Recovery trainer and an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin Madison. She is the author of Reading Families: The Literate Lives of Urban Children (Teachers College Press, 2003), Confronting Racism, Poverty and Power (Heinemann, 2004), and Rereading Families (Teachers College Press, in press).

Sue Duncan, Reading Recovery Trainer, Georgia State University
Sue Duncan trained as a Reading Recovery trainer in New Zealand. She has worked as a trainer in New Zealand, England, and Canada. She is currently a trainer at Georgia State University. Prior to becoming a trainer, Sue was a teacher leader and a primary teacher.
Susan King Fullerton, Associate Professor, Clemson University
Susan King Fullerton is an associate professor at Clemson University in South Carolina. She has been a Reading Recovery trainer, teacher, teacher of the deaf, staff developer, and literacy coach. Her research interests include Reading Recovery with the Deaf, motivation, and reader responses to literature.

Floretta Thornton-Reid, Executive Director, Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative Programs, Georgia State University
Floretta Thornton-Reid is an assistant professor and the executive director for the Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative programs at Georgia State University. Her research interest is the education of diverse learners. She serves as a trainer representative to the Reading Recovery Council of North America Board and President-Elect for the Reading Recovery North American Trainers Group.
Janice Van Dyke, Reading Recovery Trainer/Coordinator, Central Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery, Ontario, Canada
Janice Van Dyke is the Reading Recovery Trainer/Coordinator at the Central Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery, responsible for the training of teacher leaders and coordinating the implementation of Reading Recovery in school districts across Ontario, Canada. Janice has been involved in Reading Recovery as a teacher and teacher leader, and currently serves on the Communications Committee for RRCNA.
