Frequently Asked Questions

Opportunities and Options
Conflict specialists come from the ranks of attorneys, counselors, psychologists, financial planners, healthcare professionals, human resource managers, government employees, clergy, educators and school administrators, among others. These professionals have found that dispute resolution training provides them with opportunities to:

• Augment income and skills
• Qualify for court appointments
• Assist families in crisis
• Develop new systems for workplace disputes
• Protect business reputations and assets
• Help litigants save costs and risks of a trial

The training program at Texas Woman's University begins with the premise that to understand human behavior, you must first start with yourself. Most classes include self-assessment inventories that provide insight into your strengths and weaknesses, your problem-solving skills, and other personality characteristics that affect your role as a conflict specialist. The more you learn about yourself, the more adept you become at understanding and managing conflict.

As a participant in TWU's program, you may take just the basic mediation course, one or more of the advanced courses, or you may earn a Certificate in Conflict Resolution. Students in the certificate program are required to take 130 hours of course work followed by the Mediation Practicum. To fulfill the program requirements, you must complete the Basic 40-Hour Mediation workshop plus three additional classes of your choice.

The certificate program provides opportunities to build practitioner skills, forge relationships with professional colleagues for networking and information exchange, and develop credentials as a conflict resolution counselor.

Clock Hours, CEUs & MCLE
All courses are approved for clock hours and continuing education units (CEUs) that may be used to fulfill requirements by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists, the Texas State Board of Examiners of Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), and the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists, among other professions. The certificate presented at the end of each course will verify attendance for awarding appropriate clock hours and/or CEUs.

Courses have also been submitted for approval to (and most have been approved by) the State Bar of Texas for MCLE credit. Confirmation of approval and the number of MCLE credits will be provided in the confirmation letter. No certificates will be awarded for partial attendance.

Academic Credit
Some classes may be taken for three hours of graduate or undergraduate academic credit.

Individuals who wish to register for college credit must meet admission requirements of TWU and pay a $30 application fee. Students will then pay the tuition rate, student fees, and a course fee. Credit students will be required to complete an assignment in addition to time spent in class.

For information about academic credit, contact Dr. Larry LeFlore, Professor/Chair of TWU Department of Family Sciences, at P.O. Box 425769, Denton, TX 76204, (940) 898-2691 or email lleflore@twu.edu.
