Tony Stead, Educational Consultant, Australia
Tony Stead is an Australian educator who has taught in elementary schools and lectured at the University of Melbourne. Tony is the past president of the Melbourne Chapter of the Australian Reading Association and the author of many publications. Tony currently works with school districts across the United States. His greatest love is learning from children.

Billie J. Askew, Professor Emerita, Texas Woman’s University
Billie J. Askew is Professor Emerita at Texas Woman’s University. She is a past-president of the Reading Recovery Council of North America and the North American Trainers Group, and she currently serves as the U. S. representative on the Executive Board of the International Reading Recovery Trainers Organization. With Jan Gaffney, Billie was the co-editor of Stirring the Waters: The Influence of Marie Clay.
Diane DeFord, Chair of the College of Education Faculty, University of South Carolina and Reading Recovery Trainer Emeritus
Diane DeFord is a Reading Recovery trainer emeritus. She teaches courses at the University of South Carolina and works with the State Department of Education in South Carolina teaching Reading First interventionists and literacy coaches from elementary through high school settings. She has authored many professional articles and books, and she writes books for children. She is also author of the Pearson Learning’s Dominie Reading and Writing Assessment Portfolio (K-8th Grade).
Debbie Diller, Educational Consultant, Houston, Texas
Debbie Diller is a national educational consultant and popular conference speaker. Debbie uses her experience of 30 years as a classroom teacher, Title I reading specialist, and literacy coach to teach others about sensible, realistic ways to meet the literacy needs of all students in the classroom. She is the author of several books from Stenhouse, including Literacy Work Stations: Making Centers Work and Practice with Purpose: Literacy Work Stations for Grades 3-6, as well as the video series, Launching Literacy Stations, and her newest book Making the Most of Small Groups: Differentiation for All.
Irene Fountas, Professor, Lesley University
Irene directs a comprehensive school reform project in the School of Education at Lesley University. She has been a classroom teacher, language arts specialist, and consultant in school districts across the nation and abroad and has received numerous awards for her contributions to literacy. Irene and co-author, Gay Su Pinnell, have published several books with Heinemann including the most recent, Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency: Thinking, Talking and Writing About Reading Grades K-8.

Margaret Mooney continues to balance work in her homeland, New Zealand, and the United States of America as an author, consultant, and teacher. Her main focus is helping to ensure that early literacy efforts lay a broad and solid foundation for later development.
Gay Su Pinnell, Professor of Education, The Ohio State University
Gay’s professional work focuses on literacy education of children and on ways to support teachers of reading, writing, and language arts. She has written numerous articles and received several prestigious awards for her work. Her most recent book with co-author, Irene Fountas, is Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency: Thinking, Talking and Writing About Reading Grades K-8.
Gary Soto, Author, California
Gary Soto is the author of ten poetry collections for adults, most notably New and Selected Poems, and a 1995 finalist for both the Los Angeles Rimes Award and the National Book Award. His most popular books include Baseball in April, Too Many Tamales, Chato’s Kitchen, and Buried Onions. In 1997, for his work with young people, he was NBC Person of the Week. He lives in Berkeley, California.
Lily Wong Fillmore, Professor Emerita, University of California Berkeley
Lily Wong Fillmore is a linguist and an educator. Much of her research, teaching, and writing have focused on issues related to the education of language minority students. Over the past 35 years, she has conducted studies of second language learners in school settings on Latino, Asian, American Indian, and Eskimo children. She was recognized by the government of Spain for her work on behalf of Spanish-speaking children in the U.S. Lily has conducted research in Yupik villages in Alaska and directed a UC Berkeley doctoral program for American Indian leaders in New Mexico.
Jill Kerper Mora, Professor Emeritus, San Diego State University
Jill Kerper Mora is Professor Emeritus from the College of Education at San Diego State University. Her international teaching and scholarly accomplishments span the disciplines of language minority education policy analysis, Spanish/English biliteracy, teacher education and curriculum and instruction. Her CLAD Website received the California Association for Bilingual Education 2002 Award for Research & Scholarly Activities.
