Women's Aging Complexities:
The Impact on Oral Health Needs
Friday, September 5, 2008 |
8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Texas Woman's University
CFO Building, Room 204 - Denton Campus
Symposium Overview
Women’s aging issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and osteoporosis will be addressed along with their surprisingly strong influence on the oral cavity. With oral health being an integral part of general health, oral problems indigenous to women will be addressed. The impact from medications and the oral manifestations they create will greatly determine how dental products should best be utilized and tailored to meet specific needs. This presentation will detail the current research linking systemic disease with gingival and periodontal inflammation. Aspects dealing with the aging timeline in a woman’s life influencing oral health needs and the treatment approach from the registered dental hygienist will be presented.
This program will additionally provide dental professionals a detailed overview of osteoporosis and its treatments. With the issue of osteonecrosis of the jaw being prominent in the media, understanding the risk benefit ratio of treating osteoporosis with oral bisphosphonates is important for all dental professionals. In osteoporotic patients, long term treatment is essential for bone health and prevention of fracture. Routine dental care is important and should be part of the osteoporosis treatment regimen. Education will help dental professionals balance dental health needs with bone health concerns.
