Purpose
- Celebrate the dance and music of all Latin America
- Provide developing companies a format to showcase their work
- Raise standards through an adjudication and feedback process
- Build an educated folklórico audience
- Recognize outstanding companies
Criteria for Selection
Both theatrical and traditional folklórico and baile típico submissions will be considered for the La Gran Competencia. Works will be evaluated based on cultural representation, technical execution, evolution of the choreography, overall impression, balance between theatrical and traditional elements as well overall impression. Our goal is to educate the public as well as developing dancers in the beauty and diversity of the Latino culture. Because works presented at the Latino Dance and Music Festival will be emulated by others, it is of extremely important that works strive for the highest standard of execution and authenticity. In keeping with traditional standards, works presented are required to represent traditions that have existed for at least fifty years.
Choreographers of creative, experimental works that push the folkloric art to new limits are encouraged to submit entries. Regardless of the folklórico style used, choreographers are expected to stay within the confines of the selected style from beginning to end.
Submission Requirements
- Each Gran Competencia cuadro submission must be on a separate VHS video cassette or DVD. If more than one entry is received on a VHS cassette or DVD only the first entry will be considered. Cassettes and DVD’s must be clearly labeled.
- If accepted into Round II, companies will be required to present the work that was submitted for adjudication. Works accepted into Round II are expected to implement the suggestions made by Maestra Lozano.
- Directors and full time professional dancers may participate in this event.
- Group requirements are a minimum of 6 couples and maximum of 12 twelve couples.
- All entries will be limited to a minimum of 6 minutes and maximum of 15 minutes. Time is calculated from the moment the music begins.
- Send only copies. Video and DVD submissions will not be returned.
- Costumes are not required for the pre-adjudication of the videotapes, but they are encouraged.
- Music may be either recorded or live. The primary consideration for adjudication will be authenticity of the interpretations and instrumentation. Cassettes music will not be accepted. Two CD copies containing only the Gran Competencia musical selections are to be submitted prior to the performance. Label CD’s clearly with the name group name, musical selection, and region.
- All Round II Submission will be required to use the same stage backdrop and general lighting.

Backstage space is very limited, therefore only dancers who are performing and whose names appear on the performance roster will be allowed back stage.
