Opening Keynote Speakers

Linda Dorn, Professor of Teacher Education, University of Arkansas at Little Rock
Linda Dorn is a Professor of Reading and Director of the Center for Literacy at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She has 28 years of experience in education, including both elementary and intermediate levels. Linda serves on the Board of Directors for the Reading Recovery Council of North America. Her contributions to literacy education are nationally recognized. Linda has published widely, including research on early intervention, articles, children’s materials, and staff development training materials. She has co-authored four professional books: Apprenticeship in Literacy: Transitions Across Reading and Writing; Scaffolding Young Writers: A Writing Workshop Approach; Shaping Literate Minds: Developing Self-Regulated Learners; and Teaching for Deep Comprehension: A Reading Workshop Approach (Stenhouse). She is the primary developer and lead trainer for the Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy Model. Currently, Linda is directing research on the Comprehensive Intervention Model, including the development and implementation of Intervention Groups for struggling readers in the intermediate grades.

Barbara Schubert, Director of the Comprehensive Language and Literacy Model and Reading Recovery Trainer, Saint Mary’s College
Barbara Schubert is a Reading Recovery Trainer at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California where she also directs the Comprehensive Language and Literacy Reform Model project. She is a respected educator, author, consultant and leader in literacy and cross-cultural understanding. Barbara has been the recipient of many field study grants in the areas of literacy and history and social science, including Fulbright-Hayes Fellowships to West Africa and to China. In addition, she has been the recipient of the Margaret Lynch Exemplary Service Award and the John Martin Distinguished Service Award for having made an outstanding contribution to literacy in California. Barbara is a Past President of the California Reading Association.

Lily Wong Fillmore, Professor Emerita, University of California at Berkeley

Lily Wong Fillmore is a linguist and an educator. Much of her research, teaching, and writing have focused on issues related to the education of language minority students. Over the past 35 years, she has conducted studies of second language learners in school settings on Latino, Asian, American Indian, and Eskimo children. She was recognized by the government of Spain for her work on behalf of Spanish-speaking children in the U.S. Lily has conducted research in Yupik villages in Alaska and directed a UC Berkeley doctoral program for American Indian leaders in New Mexico.
