B.S. in Nutrition: Emphasis in Dietetics

TWU undergraduates who major in Nutrition: Emphasis in Dietetics prepare for careers in clinical dietetics, community nutrition, institutional administration and other areas of dietetics. They take courses in nutrition, foodservice management, science, business, food science, nutrition education and counseling and research. These courses satisfy the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) requirements. Completion of the degree qualifies students to apply for dietetic internship programs.

B.S. in Nutrition: Emphasis in Nutritional Sciences 

TWU undergraduates who major in Nutrition: Emphasis in Nutritional Sciences take courses in nutrition, bionutrition, community nutrition, research and chemistry. Students with this degree are encouraged to seek advanced degrees (MS, PhD) to prepare them for careers in research or college/university education. The addition of other recommended courses can prepare students for entry into medical, dental or Physical Therapy Schools.

Facilities

Nutrition research laboratories enable students to obtain hands-on experience with research projects using state-of-the-art analytical equipment. A sensory lab helps students in food science classes learn about aspects of flavor, texture, and color of food.  Food laboratories emphasize food product development and quality analysis.  Computer labs allow students to use software for nutrient analysis and food service management applications.

B.S. in Nutrition: Emphasis in Wellness

The Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences has developed a degree program in wellness that addresses the unmet needs in the health care field for individuals interested in serving as health educators with expertise that incorporates knowledge and skills within nutrition, physical activity, and health promotion.

This degree will provide opportunities to:

  • work in the area of program development with the intent of promoting good health through preventive nutrition, regular physical activity, and other modifications.
  • further complete a limited number of additional courses, which will qualify them to take a certification examination (Certified Health Education Specialist).

A Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition: Emphasis in Wellness at Texas Woman's University will provide students with the knowledge and experience required to obtain a successful career in the area of health promotion.

Academic Areas
The degree will include a didactic program in the areas of basic and applied nutrition, food science, kinesiology, and health studies that will be built on a solid foundation of life sciences.

  • Nutrition: Advanced courses in basic (advanced nutrition, nutrition through life cycle, and trends and controversies in nutrition) and applied nutrition (community nutrition, culture and food, and sports nutrition) will prepare students with broad background knowledge of nutrition from infancy to old age.
  • Kinesiology: Twelve hours of courses in kinesiology will prepare students for aspects of physical education most relevant to wellness and health.
  • Health Studies: This portion of the curriculum will prepare students with knowledge of health assessment, evaluation, and program development.

Transfer from Community Colleges
Transfer agreements between the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences and community colleges allow students to easily transfer from a two-year program to TWU.

Career Outlook
Graduates with a degree in Nutrition: Emphasis in Wellness from the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences can choose from a number of rewarding careers in many fields, depending on their educational preparation and interests.  Opportunities can be pursued in:

  • Public health education
  • Community nutrition
  • Consultation and provate practice
  • Health and wellness programs
  • Health maintenance organizations
  • Health promotion program coordination
  • Patient/clinical advocate

B.S. in Food and Nutrition in Business and Industry

TWU undergraduates who major in Nutrition in Business and Industry take courses in nutrition, foodservice management, science, business, food science and computer applications. These students are encouraged to minor in business administration, management or marketing. This degree prepares students to work for organizations that develop and market food products, manage food preparation and service, or do a variety of other activities in the area of business, dietetics or community nutrition.

B.A.S. in Culinary Science and Food Service Management

Bachelor of Applied Sciences (B.A.S.) in Culinary Science and Food Service Management is a degree program that has been developed by Texas Woman’s University in collaboration with community colleges to fulfill the growing demand of Chef-Managers and Chef-Scientists.

TWU undergraduates who major in Culinary Science and Food Service Management will focus on academic areas of food service management, food science, and nutrition in combination with the discipline of Culinary Science.  Facilities available are the Food Prep/Food Science Lab, Culinary Lab, Product Development and Fry Lab, Sensory Evaluation Lab, and Analytical Lab.  This program will enable the student to have a valuable degree that will result in maximizing career opportunities in the culinary arts and the food industry.

Procedure for Students Requiring Accommodations

Disability Support Services students using testing accommodations on Houston and Dallas campuses

  1. Student meets with DSS representative each semester to acquire Academic Adjustment letter
  2. Student secures faculty signature on Academic Adjustment letter & returns it to DSS
  3. Student must sign up for any exams for which they will need testing accommodations (online through DSS web site).
  4. Student will be strongly encouraged to sign up for all of the semester’s exams during his/her semester appointment.  If student chooses to wait until later in the semester, the student must give DSS a four-day (business days) notice in advance of the exam.
  5. DSS will notify faculty in writing that the student has requested testing accommodations. 

At this point, the faculty will have two options:

  1. Make independent arrangements with the student in order to provide him/her with approved accommodations.
  2. Reply to the DSS email that gave notice of the student’s test request so that DSS can make arrangements for separate testing locations, proctors, or equipment such as computers, etc. 

Testing locations are listed below:

  • Dallas - Parkland  3510 or 3514  Presbyterian  109
  • Houston - 4305 or 5305

Note:  this process requires student initiation.  Some students, although eligible for testing accommodations, may choose not to use them.  In that case, students are to take the exam with all other students in the classroom.
