Hello from Texas - Nov 2010

Hello from TexasThe American Dietetic Association (ADA) honored TWU by selecting our students and interns to represent the students of the State of Texas at the Opening Session of 2010 ADA FNCE in Boston, MA.  ADA President Judy Rodriguez recognized students from across the nation in her opening address to more than 5,000 Registered Dietitians and dietetic professionals.  Dr. Vicky Imrhan and Mrs. Martha Rew directed the event which was televised to the national convention site.

NFS Seminar Series Presentation - Oct 2010

Dr Satya PrakashDr Satya Prakash of McGill University in Canada presented information on microencapsulated bacterial cell formulations and their potential use in cancer therapy.  Dr Prakash is one of many guests to present on Fridays at noon in the NFS Seminar Series.  All are welcome to attend these presentations at no charge.

The Student Dietetic Association (SDA) participated in the annual Boo at the U Trunk or Treat handing out goodies to hundreds of local children.

Pioneer Pace - Mar 2010

SDA members wait with refreshments for runners to finish the raceOn March 6, the Denton Student Dietetic Association hosted Pioneer Pace, a 5K walk and fun run on Denton campus with proceeds going to the TWU Food Bank and Our Daily Bread.  SDA members were all smiles waiting with refreshments for the runners to cross the finish line. 

 

After the race, everyone hangs out, laughs, and has a great time chattingAfter the race, runners take time to relax, laugh, and chat with SDA members, faculty, and other Pioneer Pace participants.

 

 

Functional Foods Sixth International Conference - Dec 2009

Dr Martirosyan and Dr Prasad kickoff the ConferenceTWU hosted the Functional Foods Sixth International Conference - "Functional Foods for Chronic Diseases:  Diabetes and Related Diseases" on Dec 4-5, 2009.  The Conference brought together experts in the food industry, medicine, and biology to discuss the contribution of functional foods in the prevention and treatment of diabetes and its complications.  NFS Chair Dr Chandan Prasad (at right) was Co-Chair of the Conference with Dr Danik Martirosyan (at left), founder of Functional Food Center, Inc.

Deck the Halls - Dec 2009

Quantity Foods studentsQuantity Foods once again created a fabulous meal and presentation.  Their Deck the Halls event included food pairs such as an amazing cranberry salad dressing complimented with warm cranberry apple cider and toasted pecan rice matched by pecan carrot cake.  Their lovely luncheon ended with holiday music by TWU Choirs directed by School of Arts Joni Jensen.

 

Phi Kappa Phi - Nov 2009

Simin Engineer received award for high academic achievementQuantity Foods students served a delightful meal at the Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society reception where NFS student Simin Engineer, shown at left, was honored for high academic achievement.

 

 

Social Work Kinship Fair - Oct 2009

Russender Powell, NFS Graduate Student, had a table set up at the Fall Kinship Fair to help educate children and parents on the importance of healthy eating habits.  The purpose of the annual fair hosted by the Social Work Department is to recognize the families caring for children in Denton County supporting Kinship Families of Child Protective Services.  Russender displayed realistic models of food, fat, and muscle.
